it feeds AC current to the rectifier.
why are you checking it ?

Re: '89 V6 Excel Lighting Coil

I cannot get the timing right. I've replaced spark plugs, coils, wires & caps with new. Cleaned and rebuilt the carbs. Checked all sensors related to firing. I have the Yamaha manual and did it all "by the book". It is very hard starting and misfires terribly(very smokey) at idle and throttle-up. It runs pretty good at WOT. I tried a "used" TPS which I'm suspect of as I cannot set it up using an ohm meter as per the manual.

Any thoughts? Thank you!

Re: '89 V6 Excel Lighting Coil

can you post a picture of the port side of the engine?
I never tried to set the TPS with an ohmmeter I always used the TPS voltage output and dont forget to check the 5 v reference input voltage.
timing is controled by inputs from the TPS and the CPS inputs to the micro-processor.
tps output voltage with throttles fully closed should be .41V, crank position sensor resistance is 710 ohms and at idle you should see about 1-1.5 volts or so using a peak reading meter.
have you checked all the pulser coil voltage outputs, low and high speed charge coil outputs?
CDI outputs?
what is the actual timing when idleing? at wot?
have you checked the low pressure fuel pumps have you checked the primestart pump diaphram?
timing normally wont make the engine smoke, a defect in the primestart or the oil pump check valves or the recirculation check valves will.
