Upper swivel shaft installation

Hi Everyone, I have just refurbished my 1989 bravo one transom assembly. This weekend I will be reinstalling it. My question is on the upper swivel shaft which direction does the seal face? I know it slides down to the bottom of the shaft but face up or down? The one side of this little black plastic/rubber ring is flat and the other has a lip on it sorta. After looking at the diagrams it appears the seal is positioned at the base of the upper swivel shaft and then pushed thru the gimbal ring and then the large washer goes on under the steering lever and then the smaller washer goes on the top of the steering lever. The diagram does not show which way this seal goes on the shaft. Maybe the image is so small I just can?t tell. Any one have any experience with this? Thank you

Jeff

Re: upper swivel shaft installation bravo 1

Don S. Thank you for your reply and link to the OEM Service Manual. I asked the question about the seal because when I removed the upper swivel pin the seal and bushing were on the top section of the pin when I removed the pin from the gimbal housing. Not in the slot opening where the pin came out of. (if that makes any sense) I see that a "Bearing and Seal Driver" is used to reinstall the bushings and seal. I found the part number in the special tools section of the manual and then looked it up on line and it runs about $350.00 . Since I don't have one of those bearing and seal driver tools is there another way to install the bushings and seal without it ? Any ideas on a "poor mans" rig that would do the trick ? Also other than the loctite on the o d of the seal do you apply any other type of stuff to the bushings ? Man i hope i have asked the right question s...
