On my 350 the alternator is up top and the power steering is down low? Is that a merc thing? Mine is a "volvo".

Re: 5.0 to 5.7 Rapido rebuilt engine swap

Well I went to Wally World and purchased a new battery. This one is less than two years old so it should have been under warranty but I have no clue where the battery receipt is at. I know it had faded and I took it out of the sleeve and placed it with some papers but who knows where. I could've demanded the warranty service but decided to forgo all of that so I could get home and get it started.

Came home connected everything and a couple of backfires but no ignition. Stepped back and scratched my head a few times then remembered the distributor had been disturbed so I removed the #1 spark plug and cranked it over until I felt compression and it lined up the mark on the timing cover. Then I lined up the rotor with the #1 wire and set it back into place and she fired right up. I got the timing light out and set the timing to 8 degrees btdc. I think I have to redo it though, might have moved to 9 degrees when I was tightening it up.

I am so happy, the engine sounds good and to my pleasure no water in the oil and no leaks that I could find. I have uploaded video of engine running on you tube. Once it processes I will add the link here. Next weekend I will try to get the engine back in the boat and begin the break-in period.

wil7483 your thread is fantastic ! I would like to add something that may or may not add up to allot but I did notice that you use the fram sure grip oil filters. I'm no expert by far but on my craft(3.0LX inline GM 4 cylinder) and other vehicles I have owned I used those filters and noticed a 10 to 15 psi drop in oil pressure from any other filter. I did'nt think much of it at first but when asked my supervisor @ work if he had any idea why his immediate reply was "you aren't using those fram sure grip filters are you" mind you this is a person that has built professional drag race engines for over 30 years and I do respect his opinion when it comes to motors period especially GM. So I do not mean to sour anything you have done so far because I personally think you have inspired me and many others with this thread but please protect that investment with a Delco. Keep up the good work I can't wait to see the y tube video and water test results.

I hope so Rick. I should've gone this route last year when I realized the engine was junk. Now I need people here to chime in and help me out with break in procedures and so fourth. I guess I will start a new thread for that.

Hey Krisnowicki, that is a very good question. I did not have a tach available when I started the engine so I can't tell you what the engine was idling at. Once I get it in the boat next weekend I will be able to make any adjustments that are necessary as well as readjust the timing with the engine under load.

Maybe not....

The most critical break-in component is the camshaft.

Your rings will break-in rather quickly. Most engine rebuilders will have a fairly specific cam break-in (usually a constant, specific RPM for a specific amount of time) but after that is done, don't "baby" it and the rings will break-in pretty quickly.

I used to work at an aircraft engine and airframe repair facility and we'd break-in rebuilt aircraft engines by running them wide-open..... you could watch the cyl head temps and tell exactly when the rings seated. The guy that owned the place also had an automotive machine shop and rebuilt all kinds of engines. He always broke in his rebuilt engines by NOT running them easy........

Above all, speak to Rapido and break it in the the way they instruct you to...

Seems like it runs great, where does the water get induced into the exhaust in MerCruisers ?

Great job! Congrats! I think Rapido leaves the engines at top dead center when they ship them, but you may have rotated it some when you adjusted the valves/lifters.

I can't wait to see the video of the water test.

Yea they do but I did move it when I attached the flywheel nuts and the harmonic balancer pulley.

I can't wait to take the water test!!!!!!!!!!!! I still have to order my new SEI drive but for now I am going to run the old drive until I get it ordered and it arrives.

What's wrong with your old drive? Can you get away with only purchasing the uppor or lower?
I bought the SEI drive too (just the upper) and it has worked well for me.

I purchased it used and just don't trust it. I'd rather just go ahead and buy a new one with a warranty and feel at ease on the water.

Standard break in procedure is 2000 rpm for 20 minutes, change oil and filter. After 10 hours re-adjust valves at idle speed by tightening until the cylinder falters then backing off 1/4 turn. Change oil and filter, re-torque head bolts and you should be good to go. At 50 hours or end of season, (which ever comes first), change the oil and filter and run for 5 minutes at idle.

Re: 5.0 to 5.7 Rapido rebuilt engine swap

Just to follow up on this thread, I got the motor mounts back installed in the boat this evening and then decided to go ahead and get the motor in the boat while I still had sunlight.

Once I got it in the boat I went ahead and connected it to the transom and connected the power steering hoses (this was easy for a change since I installed new hoses and fittings during the build). I got the electrical and transom plate grounds all connected to the engine as well. Tomorrow I will finish the install and align the engine. Mind you I am doing all of this by myself with no help. Once I get it aligned I will reattach the sterndrive and head to the nearest body of water for a quick series of tests.
