Man ... just got a PHONE CALL from a "Mr. Jim Williams" of the Federal Claims Bureau. He said they needed to check me out and verify I was not a terrorist before they could deliver the $285,000 check I had won from the Publishers Continental Sweepstakes. The Publisher's Continental Sweepstakes people are located in Las Vegas, NV, btw.

He gave me their number and told me I needed to call them and verify my winnings. Then I needed to call him back and let him know that we would accept the check ... and all we had to do was pay the $1850 fee for the delivery insurance (because 6 years ago someone claimed they didn't receive their check).

BTW, there is no internet record of a Publisher's Continental Sweepstakes and the (702) 789-0532 number they gave has a couple reports of scamming activity, but it is a valid number in Vegas. The 866-927-3728 number of the "Federal Claims Bureau" is not the Federal Claims Bureau and also has some scams registered against it. It was interesting that the Bureau did not have extension numbers, but you were just to ask for Jim Williams.

I guess I will pass on the $285,000 unless one of you wants to pay the $1850 for me????:mad::mad:

I would call the police right away and report this.

People are so used to seeing scams that they tend to go unreported by most.

This attitude does very little to discourage scammers.

Re: I Won!

Kind of funny that things from Vegas are automatically labeled as a scam, trust me this one isn't...

They called twice last week and I already have 2- $185K checks in the mail,,, guy said they might call me back again since they have some unclaimed prizes... :D

Some people may not read that as a joke..

Yes, this is a scam like any other 'send us money before we send you money' scam.

Re: I Won!

Ask for their address. Tell them you will pick it up in person. No need for shipping insurance.

Aspeck, you are one lucky man. You ALMOST won Tyme's boat barn cost contest for a free spool of line a while back.

Too bad for me that I didn't think about the "insurance" fee for the winners!!:D

I have an idea too - call them up and tell them that you will send the $1,850 insurance fee right away, but you have to have that amount insured as well. Then tell them that the insurance policy is $1,850, with a $10,000 handling fee. Finally, tell them that, upon receipt and clearance of their certified funds in the amount of $11,850, you will immediately mail a fake bank check for $1,850!

You know, I did call the police ... before I posted here. I called a friend who is a deputy in the sheriff's department. He laughed and said, "Call them and have fun with them for a while if you want. It will be too hard to catch them."

What does he know, I thought. I am supposed to call these crooks back today. They are waiting for my call. Seems like a good sting opportunity. So I call the State Police. The answering officer starts laughing and thinks the whole thing is funny. He tells me he investigated one once and ended up in an empty motel room in Vegas. He said these guys are almost impossible to catch, and since I didn't loose any money I probably should not waste the time in filing a report. He would take it if I wanted, but it would do no good.

So, I tried to report it, but was dissuaded by the law enforcement agents.

You know, I did........................................................................, "Call them and have fun with them for a while if you want. It will be too hard to catch them."

That should read "There's no revenue in catching or prosecuting them."

The moniker should read........ To Protect, Serve and Generate Revenue.

why do they spend money on commercials for stuff like this if they arent going to at least make an effort to enforce the law?!.......they have time to harass kids with skateboards on sidewalks and atvs on dirt roads..........you would think they could at least put a little effort into catching a thief.

remember people: this is your tax money hard at work!
