V/P 280 outdrive tilt problem

Am having trouble removing the elect./mech. tilt housing on an '85 era 280 outdrive. Have the Clymer manual which says to remove 2 allen hd. bolts from base, after putting drive all the way down, and then lift. It appears to be frozen or welded in place. Drive is very slow going up or down and one boater said it may be a bent worm screw so wanted to extract it and look. Motor seems to run quiet and cool. The dimwit I bought the boat from had actually used some steel type bondo putty to hold the #4 plug in (AQ125) instead of rethreading it so am afraid he may have done something stupid here as well. Any ideas on getting this out without the use of a cutting torch or recip. saw would be appreciated.:confused::confused:

Re: V/P 280 outdrive tilt problem

Those lifts are pretty slow to begin with. If the Worm gear were damaged I think it would make some noise. Your on the right track with those two bolts. Those are the only thing holding the mechanism. Use caution, those are very expensive to replace. Someone may have added a gasket sealant or something when the assembly was last installed and is holding it tight. If the drive goes up and down without any odd noises I'd be inclined to leave it alone. I've found them to be very durable if used properly.

Good luck!

If that boat has been in salt water, you may never get it out in one piece. So before you go taking the tilt mechanism apart have a look at some other things.
With the drive all the way, use the electric lift to just get the drive starting to move up, mayby 1/2 to 1 ". Just enough to disengage the reverse lockdown.
Now, manually lift the drive up, you should be able to lift the drive up easily and it fall back down on it's own does it? If not, you probably have problems with corrosion on the pivot bushings.

Re: V/P 280 outdrive tilt problem

Yes boat has definately been in salt water by previous dimwit. Had to pull the head and get it welded up on #4 exhaust because of abuse. Lower tilt housing is heavily rusted from the salt environment also I think. My previous boat was a new 1980 Glasply with V/P outdrive and it seemed to be fairly quick up and down but maybe thats just my memory. I was quicker then also. If the snow lets up tomorrow I'll pull it outside and try lifting the drive and see what I got. Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Plugged all the wires back in today and lifted the outdrive by hand and it lifts and goes back down easily and quietly. Will quit trying to fix somethin that may not be broke yet!

If things are as they should be, if you lift the drive by hand and were to just let go, it would drop like a rock nd SLAM down hard. If it doesn't, then you have problems and that may be why it's slow.
