Gettin ready to buy a couple new batteries for my bayliner trophy with a 90 merc powering it. Last season a was using two used deep cycle batteries. have a switch so i can use both batts seperate or together. I was thinking about buying one new deep cycle for running electronics and one cranking battery for starting the motor...Is this a good idea? or is it better to run two deep cycles? If a regular automotive battery is good to use what is the minumum cranking amps i should be pushing for a 1996 90 merc?. I had a few issues last season with some dead battteries so im just trying to get this worked out...

Absolutely, that's what you have to do! Deep cycle battery were not intended to power a starter. That's probably why you had problem. And use a marine type battery.

Yes, an automotive battery can do the jod, and a deep cycle too in case of emergency, but it will be cheaper to buy the right stuff right away than burning a couple of battery...

I bought one of those trickle chargers that uses solar power. Fantastic little thing that stops the hassle of bringing the battery off the boat to charge. I use a fair amount of power on the boat, but it rains alot here in england and I was more worried about the bilge pump running out of juice when she's on her mooring..

75/90 hp Operation Above 32F (0C) 465 Marine Cranking Amps (MCA) or 350 Cold Cranking AMPS (CCA) Operation Below 32F (0C)

1000 Marine Cranking Amps (MCA) or 750 Cold Cranking AMPS (CCA) Ampere-Hours (Ah) 70 - 100

im glad i got that straight...i bought the boat used last year and did alright last season...so a good deep cycle for electronics and radio. then get a marine type cranking battery with a min of 465 cranking AMPS.

will it cause any damage to the motor if you run a cranking battery that has high cranking amps....? like 1000?

Not at all. Cranking amps are like horsepowers, you never had too much...;)
