I have a 03 Glastron valued at 12,000 and I am shopping for insurance. Is any one company better than others? How much should I be paying? Can I get a good policy on line or should I look local? Thanks for the help.

Boatus has some of the best prices and I have heard nothing but great things about them. I use my local agent just because I am loyal to him and he has always taken care of me.

I should have added that My local Agent is with State Farm. Both cars, boat, House.

farm bureau, did the best for me, on all 4 boats, houses and cars.

That's kind of funny. I just switched over the house and autos from Allstate to Farm Bureau because they were MUCH cheaper. They beat them all to pieces, even though I've been with Allstate for 15 years. But, Allstate was still cheaper on the boat, so I left it there. To the OP, I think it's really going to depend on the area you live in, and a lot of other factors. Just keep calling around till you get a price you're happy with. Don't just jump on the cheapest price, though. Take the company's service into consideration. Also, make sure they won't raise rates on you if you have to file a claim. Good luck!

I have Geico insurance for my autos and decided to insure through their partner firm called "Ski Safe." I recently bought a new boat and it cost me just $280'ish for the entire year. I was amazed at how cheap that is.

I've been using Progressive since I got my boat (24' W/A) 3 years ago. I shop around each year and they are always the cheapest for the coverage that I need. They also lower my deductible by 25% each year if I don't have any claims.
It's like anything in this day and age - shop around! I have found prices to be all over the map. A lot of companies claim to have low prices, but they really don't. Also, be sure to compare the coverage you are getting for the price. Some may low ball you but you aren't 1 for 1 in coverage.

Kind of interesting - I was in a buddy's shop last week and they had a claim on a lower unit. The owner had Progressive like I do so I was interested in how they handled the claim. The guy had clearly installed a prop without the thrust washer and naturally the prop ate into the housing. And naturally he claimed he hit something.

The adjuster wanted to see the gears and such to inspect for damage. The guy was not stupid, he knew right away what happened. The adjuster looked at the parts, measured the propshaft for straightness, went to his car to look up the parts, came back inside and handed the shop owner a check to cover a new case, labor, seal kit etc less the deductiable.

I've never had a claim but it sure made me feel better.

+1 I have State Farm. Everything I have (house, cars, other boats, life) is with them as well. Their rates are very reasonable IMO. I have heard horror stories of people having difficulties with claims from just about every provider. I have never had any issues with my agent. Although it has been 20+ years since I've had any claim. But when I did, it was one phone call and that was the last effort I had to make. Everything was handled by my agent. If I pay a slightly (key word here) higher rate, then I accept that for the piece of mind knowing I'm well taken care of.

Is there a link or phone # for iboat insurance? When I clicked on the insurance link from the home page it brought up like 4 or 5 different companies.

Re: Who to go with for boat insurance?

I had Boat US for several years. Needed to upgrade the coverage on my electronics and tackle.

Boat US came back with a crazy number for an electronics and tackle rider. I called State Farm, they have my auto and homeowners, and they came back with a price 2 times higher than Boat US.

Finally ended up with Progressive. They had the best price and a couple of guys I talked with had no problems with their claim services.
