I went to look at a 197? Evinrude 70hp on my lunch break today and need some help with an I.D.

Model #: 70573E
Serial #: J0010714

What I do know about it is - it's a 3 cylinder, 3 carb engine & has a lower unit that is not original. I jumped the battery and it started quickly from cold on gas that the owner told me was from last season. I'm going back on Saturday to do a compression test on it. I know if I buy it I'll have to clean the carbs & change the l/u oil & impeller at the minimum. I currently have the owner down to $450 for the motor & cables, but think I can get him lower considering the needed work.

Is there anything good/bad I need to know about these motors prior to purchase? Here's a picture I took w/ my phone (that's why the color is all screwy:D). Thanks

BOB

Re: Evinrude I.D.

Thanks - How did you find that. Is there a different table for older models? I only know the:

INTRODUCES
1234567890

but obviously it doesn't work for this model.

AHH, Thanks!:D

Overall are they pretty reliable?

I really have no idea. I haven't heard anything bad about them. Make sure the carbs are kept clean. With a multi-carb setup, if one of the carbs gets clogged or leans out, there is the potential to take that cylinder out. Just keep an eye on it for any performance changes and take care of them immediately, not 3 trips later...

Re: Evinrude I.D.

Thanks again tx1961whaler, if the compression test results are good I'm going to offer $350 or $400.

I tried to use photobucket to clean up the picture, but this is the best I could do. PSYCHEDELIC 70hp!!

Johnny/Rude introduced the INTRODUCES numbering system at the introduction of 1980.

Couldn't resist the challenge of improving your pic ... certainly not perfect, but better (IMO)!
