Re: Chevy Duramax or Dodge Cumins????

My dad just went through this very same thing. The pre emission trucks are early 2007's and older. If it is a 07 that has the same body as the 06 the emissions will be 06 as stated on the sticker under the hood. That being said if you want the 360 hp the 8th digit of the VIN must be a "D" (not positive on the 8th digit but the digit will be a 2 or a D). The 2 is 310 hp.

Did you'll see how you have to lift the whole cab off the new Ford to do anything to the motor. That's just crazy!

Well just to let you know that not all Ford 6.0's are (junk). I have over 160k on mine and had 0 issues, And mine is the 2003 model. I think most of the ford 6.0 problems are from people using programmers on them.

agreed with the ford the problems i have come across working on them for the guys at work and friends is the programers and aftermarket for these engines. when they leave them stock or a MILD tune then there is no problem but it seems to be when they "chip it" is when they start having all the problems. do these people not realize what "chipping " the engine does? just because it worked great on you friends truck does not mean it will on yours please do this proper and have eith a shop do this or do a proper tune and optimize the fuel curve for your truck (sorry bout the rant but just read this thread and on the way home a 16-17 yo had a ford f350 with semi pipes and nothing but black smoke all the way down the road sounding like CRAP)

Dodge Cummins in 6 speed. The 2003 and newer Dodges, 04.5 on being the best, have, like the chevy, a high pressure common rail fuel injection system. That makes the QUIET. Too quiet for me, I like to KNOW i have a diesel! We have 80K trouble free miles on our 05 2500 4X4 Dodge. Even with 37" tires and a "Chip" we get 19 MPG combined city hiway and 17 pulling our 22 foot boat. The Cummins engine is an industrial engine not meant for a light duty truck. It will outlast the body! Dodge has gone a LONG way to improve the ride and quality. One thing to make note of, the Chevy ride quality is better because of the front axel, its not solid, it uses flex shafts making it very weak. It really comes down to which one you like best.

Re: Chevy Duramax or Dodge Cumins????

was not trying to knock the "chip" but some of them are just crap there are some that are compleatly worth it and some people dont know that you can get them tuned (if you know how or you could have a shop do it for you for a cost) and a proper tune will give you the best power for your buck and not be wasting the extra fuel just expelling it out and causing all the carbon expulsion it may look cool to you but i bet alot of people get very pissed off about it. but hey whatever floats your boat right. if you have one and it works out for you great if it is not then i bet you could be getting ALOT more from the engine with a proper tune because no mater what every engine is not the same and a proper curve can maximize the potential of your engine thats all i was trying to say hope i didn't step on to many toes with the last coment or offend somebody here sorry if i did. (and yes i understand that not everybody can afford a custom tune for their vehicle just putting info out there for those that do not know bout the possibilities i have driven all three and all three have major potential i think its just what you feel the most comefortable with.

Re: Chevy Duramax or Dodge Cumins????

I've owned my 1998.5 Cummins 24 valve for 7 trouble free years.
The stock auto trans lasted 100K miles with BIG power. I replaced it with a full tilt, billet shafted race trans from http://www.goerend.com/
I'm putting down 550hp/1100 ft/lbs at the wheels on my truck, way more power than any of the stock offerings. I still get 18 mpg DD and 21 HWY.
Towing my rock crawler is in the 14mpg range and towing my boat should be a bit better.

People act like the Allison is the end all/ be all of auto trans, but I have news for you, they are NOT the same Allison trans that are in the big trucks. In fact, I have a friend who is a tech at a local Chevy dealership, and they keep just as many transmissions in stock for replacements as did the Dodge dealership I worked at.

The mighty Cummins is a medium duty rated engine, the Dmax and the Ford are rated as light duty. ;)

Re: Chevy Duramax or Dodge Cumins????

Well I found a what I think was a really good deal on a early 07 dodge with the 5.9L and quad cab...White just like I wanted and only 12k miles on it. It also has a transferable warranty (bumper to bumper) till 2013 or 60k. Never been driven in salt or down a gravel road. It has just a couple of dings in it that I'm gona get fixed but it was worth it for the warranty and the fact the guy only used it to pull his lil camper. It is an automatic which I had to have otherwise my wife said she wouldn't back the boat into the water for me. So at least I know I won't have to put any major money into it for 48k miles... that's good piece of mind when buying a used truck!!! And as far as the sound of the engine...Like someone else stated I like knowing there's a diesel under the hood and as far as i'm concerned you can't beat the sound of a cummins!! We'll see how we like it. BTW anyone looking for a super clean 2000 chevy ext. cab z71 with 83k on it and lots of extras hit me up!!!!

Thanks for everyone's opions!!!

Congrats!

Good job on getting the 5.9, I will always run a 5.9, not one of those choked 6.7's with the DPF garbage on them.

Thanks guys!!! Yeah I figured this is probably the closest thing I'd be able to find to a new truck without all the emission BS so figured i really should jump on it!!

Re: Chevy Duramax or Dodge Cumins????

You can't go wrong with either truck, I have a 06 dodge and it has been flawless, and I pull alot with it. Not alot of weight but have a trailer hooked up quite a bit. As far as the trans goes, all of the newer common rail 03 and up(except CA emission trucks, which all trucks are the same after 04.5) have the 48re transmission which is pretty much bullet proof....if you leave the truck stock. And as far as the chevy goes, dad has one and it has been flawless also. I think it comes down to personal preference, although I will say that the chevy rides better.....I would have a chevy but the dodge quad cab fits my needs perfectly. The duramax is a proven engine, so don't be scared away from that. Just drive them and pick the one you like the most....And stay away from modded trucks, because most of them have had the dog crap ran out of them.

FORD!!!! I'm saying that and I'm a Chevy guy. I've got a 99 F-250 with the 7.3 and a 6-speed manual. I love it. I'm almost at 190,000 miles, uses no oil, gets damn near 20 MPG on the highway, and is a blast to drive. Plus, the manual has NO PROBLEMS!!! The auto's always have problems. And having the granny gear is great. When pulling the boat out of the water, granny gear and just slowly let the clutch out. It'll chug right along.

I've got an intake, exhaust, and a tune on my PCM (80 economy). It really pulls hard.

The 7.3 is the engine to have.
