Heady off rebuilding my fist carb ever (at 41), I am taking on a long sitting project. (My 6 HP johnson starts on the first pull now - I never actually had that happen with an engine).

1976 2 HP evinrude. I don"t want to purchase $100 worth of parts if when I don't know if it will ever run, so I have a couple questions. It was the engione from my childhood, so no urgency, but I would love to see it run again.

Head turns great ( I dumped some oil in there 4 years ago when I rescued it from my fathers garage)

1) I am soaking and blowing out the carb. Full of some nasty grey muck) All the parts look suprisingly good, so I want to re assemble and see if it turns over. The only trashed items is the packing material around the two needle valves (low an high) Can I make that packing out of regular gasket material, or do I need to source the packing.

2) The original plastic tank looks solid. Will there me an issue with ethenol? i will replace the fuel line, as it is old and brittle.

3) I am concerned about the spark plug wire. The non plug end looks embedded into the housing under the flywheel. I am nervous about taking that off, as I am kind of making this up as I go. Assuming I get the carb back togethor, how can I test it to see if I am getting spark.

4) Impeller looks good, so I am not going to replace that until I get it to turn over.

Any other advice on this project would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Chris

Your worrying about too much.
Put it back together and I bet it will run great once you get the carb settings just right.
Don't worry about that foam between the needles, or the spark plug wire, gas tank or anything else.

I got it back together, new plug, and it will not turn over. Pulls good and feels smooth, just no fire up

I suspect a bad plug wire at least, maybe more.

Can someone tell me how I would check for spark?

Also, is there a website I can look at that will show me an exploded parts diagram for the engine? I seem to remember one for johnson/evinrudes, but I cannot remember the site

thanks

Pull the flywheel and clean the magnet and clean and check gap on your points. I doubt your pug wires are bad but you could try cranking it in a dark room to see if spark is going to ground anywhere. Just curious but how much would a 2 HP weigh? Best of luck. Rick.

I've sold a few of those little 2hp motors on ebay and I think they only weigh around 22lbs.

more than likely just dirty points. pull the flywheel and clean the points and reset them to .020

How did you make out? Did you test for spark? (Just hold wired plug grounded to head while somebody pulls and see if you see spark.)

p.s. Motor weighs 24#. I've owned sevaral. Got the same 76' model you have now.
As for initial car settings, bring the needles all the way in untill gently seated and back them out 1-1/4 turns to start.

I completely rebuilt a 1973 2 hp over winter and it was the easiest motor I've ever worked on.

When you go to clean and set the points take a good look at the coil. If its original it may be toast. Those old coils just don't hold up. I'll attach a photo of some bad coils on a 1972 6 hp so you can see what a bad set looks like. If yours looks anything like them then replace your coil.

Get the new needle packing from your dealer. If it leaks you will have to trouble getting it to run right.

I'd recommend buying a whole carb kit since you have it off and apart. The original cork float (I assume yours is cork) is not ethanol resistent so either replace it now or wait until the alcohol eats it up and you have to tear the carb apart again for a good cleaning and float replacement.

PM me your email address and I'll send you some service information.
