Heady off rebuilding my fist carb ever (at 41), I am taking on a long sitting project. (My 6 HP johnson starts on the first pull now - I never actually had that happen with an engine).
1976 2 HP evinrude. I don"t want to purchase $100 worth of parts if when I don't know if it will ever run, so I have a couple questions. It was the engione from my childhood, so no urgency, but I would love to see it run again.
Head turns great ( I dumped some oil in there 4 years ago when I rescued it from my fathers garage)
1) I am soaking and blowing out the carb. Full of some nasty grey muck) All the parts look suprisingly good, so I want to re assemble and see if it turns over. The only trashed items is the packing material around the two needle valves (low an high) Can I make that packing out of regular gasket material, or do I need to source the packing.
2) The original plastic tank looks solid. Will there me an issue with ethenol? i will replace the fuel line, as it is old and brittle.
3) I am concerned about the spark plug wire. The non plug end looks embedded into the housing under the flywheel. I am nervous about taking that off, as I am kind of making this up as I go. Assuming I get the carb back togethor, how can I test it to see if I am getting spark.
4) Impeller looks good, so I am not going to replace that until I get it to turn over.
Any other advice on this project would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Chris
