If the key switch is not attached, it is already bypassed. The switch turns it off. Without the switch, it is on.

You will also have to manually choke it.

a 12v battery and two pieces of wire, one to engine ground and one to coil+ thats it, you've just "hotwired" it.

Wrong!! That is true for some motors, but not the 40hp. The 40 has a self powered magneto ignition and is not connected to the battery. Applying 12 volts to it will destroy a coil.

To repeat the warning:

You're dangerously incorrect. What you recommend would destroy the coils in that outboard's magneto. Please don't post advice unless you have the needed information.

Dang! I just did this and started my new to me 67' 80hp evinrude could I have blown the magneto? It ran ok on the stand but could I have fried my charging system by doing this, and I'm really sorring offering bad advise! I feel like a real idiot, I probably don't even have magneto.

See, that's what I meant when I said that method is true for some motors. In your case, it is (sort of) ok because you have conventional battery and coil ignition...like an old car. My "sort of" comment is because you failed to take into account the fact that your coil is normally fed a voltage through a resistance wire. Your jumper wires didn't provide a resistance, so it is rough on the coil and breaker points. No you don't have a magneto.

However, you do bring up another point. You very well might have damaged your charging system if you ran it without the battery cables hooked up.

Best is not to do stuff like hotwiring and jump starting if you don't know what you are dealing with. On some motors you could do some VERY $$ damage.

Dave, the black wire that goes under the flywheel shorts the points to kill the spark. Follow it toward the dashboard and you will find a knife connection on the motor or in the electric start box mounted on the transom. Disconnect it. Now pull the manual choke knob(or flip the choke lever) to turn on the choke. You have hooked up some 50::1 fuel mix, right, and have the gearcase in a barrel of water?

Jumper the solenoid from the battery cable to the small, non black terminal and the motor will crank. Set the throttle about 1/2 way up, and it should start. Choke it to stop it.
