Dave, the black wire that goes under the flywheel shorts the points to kill the spark. Follow it toward the dashboard and you will find a knife connection on the motor or in the electric start box mounted on the transom. Disconnect it. Now pull the manual choke knob(or flip the choke lever) to turn on the choke. You have hooked up some 50::1 fuel mix, right, and have the gearcase in a barrel of water?
Jumper the solenoid from the battery cable to the small, non black terminal and the motor will crank. Set the throttle about 1/2 way up, and it should start. Choke it to stop it.
