hi,

my parents lent us an 18' bluewater shadow that had not been run in two years, i/o, with a volvo penta engine. we took it to a mechanic friend and he told us that the engine had blown its freeze plug but that it was now purring like a kitten. we took it out for its maiden voyage of the season. it was running really roughly but we thought that it might be the 2 year old gas; then after about 10 minutes of running at far less than half speed we stopped to check the engine as we smelled gasoline. when we pulled the i/o cover off of the engine - the engine was covered in gray like ooze. do you think that we have a cracked block or a blown gasket or...?

The block was not drained properly, it froze, which popped the core plugs and cracked the block internally.
Happens all the time.
You need a new engine.

The good news is you found a mechanic to avoid for next time.
