I recently pulled my dads old boat out of my garage. I know It hasn't ran for at least 7 years because my dad had passed away when I was 16. I have alot of experience working on small engines, and ussually know what to look for when an engine has problems. I am not getting any spark, so the first thing I thought was to dissconnect the kill switch, but I cannot find a kill switch. Does anyone know if it has one? I have looked on parts websites and have found a shorting switch, which I would assume is the kill switch, but I cannot find it on the engine. By the low speed adjustment knob it does say stop above "Lean", do you just lean it out to kill it?

Is it electric start or manual start? Assuming it is manual start, there are 3 items on the front panel. The left one is choke. Center is idle mixture knob, Right hand one is the kill button (shorting switch). It is a large rubber button and cannot be missed. If it isn't there, there must be an empty hole (???)

No you don't lean it out to kill it. You push the button. OR, turn the speed twist grip toward slow till it stalls.

you adjust the slow speed knob for proper running, and forget it is there.

I know leaning it out is not the answer unless you want to aluminum plate your spark plugs. It is a 1973 Evinrude 18 hp 18304 with both manual and electric start, and can be used as a tiller and remote controlled unit. I currently have it set up as a manual start tiller.

On the front panel left to right there is the choke lever, the slow speed adjustment, and then the electrical plug used to attach the remote start/stop switch, electric choke, and the 12v circuit. I will attach a picture.

I have looked up the parts break down for the "shorting switch" the second picture is all I can find. This is why I am asking where it is, or if it even has one.

Remember I am not wondering how to shut it off, I will find a way to do that when I get it running. I am just trying to eliminate possible causes for not having spark, starting with a simple fix a bad kill switch.

Also tashasdaddy you completely missed my point, I have no spark. I will worry about adjusting my slow speed when I get it running.

So, I am assuming now that it has no kill switch, and I should just move on and look into the magneto and ignition coils. I am assuming it is not the coils because I have no spark on both plugs, so I will pull my flywheel and look into the magneto first.

Re: 1973 Evinrude 18 hp 18304 Kill Switch?

The remote electric start version has an ignition key switch and choke switch for dashboard mounting. The plug-in cable leads to it. With the cable unplugged, it is always "on". Turn the speed twist grip to extreme slow and it will stall out and stop.

EDIT: The shorting switch that you pictured goes in the hole where the plug is now. You would have to remove the plug and cable from inside the motor to install the shorting switch if you want to use it.

What FR is saying; if you unplug the cable it will eliminate the kill switch.

The kill switch would go where the 5 electrical prongs are on the far right (facing engine). That connection is for the keyswitch/choke wiring harness.

I will look if I have an extra shorting switch.

My fault I was searching for a current thread by the model number of the motor and got caught up in the newly discovered threads. sorry about that. Search worked great by the way a first for me.
