Hello everyone. This is my first post here so please bare with me. I just bought a 1978 16' sea nymph "fishing machine" Aluminum V hull and I need to decide what HP motor to get. The guy I bought it from threw in a 1962 Evinrude sportwin 10hp outboard, but for one, the steering cable and throttle seems waayy to long and missing some pieces I think. I presume that there must be some bracket of some kind to fasten the cables to the transom as well as some sort of attachment to the very end of the steering cable to connect to the tiller? The motor runs fine but Im guessing that 10hp is not quite enough for my rig anyways. Ive heard that guys with 16's get 15-30's. What do you guys have and how do they perform on your 16's

1978 should have a plate. I've seen sea nymphs running 40+ hp at wheel

If its a bench seat tiller model you want at least a 25hp on it. If its a side steer it should be rated at at least 40hp.

Its rated up to 70 hp....As far as the steering, There is seat on the right side in the middle of the boat with a steering wheel.

You need to post more info. like:

So now you know the max and you can work down from there.

1. is money an issue

2. what type of use for the boat are you looking at.

3. 2 stroke or 4 stroke interest.

4. new outboard or are you looking for used.

This is just a boat to get out and do some fishing asap, before spawning is over hopefully lol. Yes at the moment cash is a problem. Id like to buy new but all I can manage is around $400.00 and 2 or 4 stroke doesn't matter to me. Ive been calling around marinas and found a few potentials but nothing for sure yet.

You will need to know what remote controls you have?
OMC-Evinrude/Johnson or Merc.

What kind of steering mechanism you have?
closeline with pulleys or, a single cable commonly called "telescopic"

if you want a clamp on style or bolt on transom mount?

forget 4 stroke for under $500....

I am sure you can find a nice mid 70's 40hp for that money, but first determine what you have and what you need?

Re: Help pick a motor for a 16'

I have that exact boat, '81 though and run an Evinrude 50, gets me 27-30 mph GPS.

I am running a CMC tilt trim so it gives me a 6'' set back and lets me run the engine a bit higher, really like the boat, I have had it for 8 years and have rebuilt it from the keel up just the way I want it.

I am pretty sure they are rated for 70 horse.

Here is a pic right after I painted it this winter.

Re: Help pick a motor for a 16'

My thoughts after seeing pictures of the steering and controls would be this,
look for at the very least a 1976 35hp Johnson or Evinrude. A 40hp or 50hp would be better still.

The reason I say this is because those parts, steering and controls, will match right up on those motors. Also many of the 25hp motors do not have the thru the bracket clamp tube for the steering. You will also need a connecting link rod. Find it on ebay.

You will also need to know the transom height. 15" or 20". The long shaft, 20", should be plentiful. Short shafts can be hard to find.

Next solution would be to find any engine in that size that has a control box with it, because if you have to buy it separately they do get pricey.

Best of luck!

i don't know where you are at but around here with fishing season just opening outboards are bring premium price so $400 would be a tough buy for something 1975 or newer. finding a 25-35hp with trim and tilt will be tough. not a lot of them ever sold with trim and tilt. but most 40-60hp were sold with trim and tilt. however my brother in law has a 16ft syvan pro fisherman with a 25hp johnson on it and it is one of the best trolling boats i have ever fished from. he has a fairly shallow pitch prop to push the weight and it will get up on plane and do 15-17mph measured with his GPS. so if a smaller motor is what you can afford right now to get you on the water to fish go for it and prop it correctly. he fished Pymatoming on the Ohio-Pa border that had a 10hp limit with a 9.9 johnson for several years and it was surprising what a 9.9 would do with the right prop. 9.9 & 15 hp motors can be had in the $300-500 range and they are dependable with a large affordable prop selection.

Here is the steering telescopic cable and the controls.

You might try this hardware out to secure the steering cable to the transom.

It's made by teleflex.

Oh, and I would suggest a 25-40hp Johnson 1970-1985. Make sure you measure the length of your transom first, to be sure that a short shaft outboard will be suitable (Transom height < 15" {short shaft} Transom height > 15" {long shaft})

This is what I'm working with...
