The steering on our pontoon is pretty hard, has been since we purchased it last August.

Is it possible to lube the cable?

Re: Lube Steering Cable

I will give you al old Morse cable trick from 35 years ago......

When we used to install new morse cables (just like our steering cables) we would soak them (completely submerged) in motor oil for a day. We used an old 55 gal drum that was cut off.

You probably have rust or corrosion inside and lubing it may not work. The safest thing to do (your not going to like this) is replace the cable.

Actually, I fully expected that reply. Didnt figure it would hurt to ask anyway. Are they fairly standard?

Re: Lube Steering Cable

Most of the time the steering cable corrodes in the tilt tube. If you can pull it out of the tilt tube and lube it up, it will be like new. Loosen and remove the big nut on the cable(usually on starboard side). Now turn the wheel. If the cable moves in and out with ease, the cable is good and the cable end needs to be lubed inside the tilt tube.
