I'll be taking a crack at the transom removal on mine in a week or two.

I'll be following along on yours too to follow the progress. Keep up the good work.

Bret. Just thought I'd throw this out there-I really wish now after the fact that I'd researched under the deck fuel tanks for my boat before I installed my plywood deck. The only thing that will fit under the jump seat is a 12 gallon and the extra storage space would really come in handy.

Secondly, that is gonna be one awesome boat! And your emblems went out today:D

Thanks for the comments! I am looking at the under deck tank, although my parts boat had a newer aluminum fuel cell, but I would have to modify the seat base. I have the cuddy cusions off to the upholsterer, and a friend of mine is making a new cuddy wall and instrument panel out of Baltic Birch. I am planning to Gluvit tonight if the weather holds.

Bret,
Are those identical trailers in two sizes on the pic?
Under the 18 Holiday it looks like the one I have.
I love mine since it is really easy to load and lunch.

Bret Looks like its coming along great .
Make sure you either reuse or make a new 1/2" plate that was on the old inner transom. You will need that piece to make the 2" thick that is require for the Mercruiser outdrive.

Hey,
I've just purchased a starcraft starchief much like this one. I believe mine is just a little older. I've got to go down to the hull as well. Starcraft was no help in finding out the year model. I believe mine was an I/O but someone addes a fuel tank/transom for an OB motor. can you give men any pointers as i get started. I do plan to put pour in foam, but have considered having a an aluminum floor made. I wanted to add a few pics, but it asks for a URL. How do you add pics.

I'd appreciate any help anyone could offfer. Thanks for sharing what you have already.

Your boat will be glad you found iboats cause this is the right place to get er done. In order to get the most out of this site for your questions, it's best that you start your own thread. Your thread will be all about your restoration project, questions and is also a good way to track your progress, just like this thread is all about wrfalpacas's journey (well before you jacked it that is:D)

Start your thread and I'll post in it, some info on how to post the 640x480 pic's (the bigger pic's)

Re: Starting a 68 Starchief Cuddy Restoration

Wow, I got the engine parts back from the machine shop ($1049 later:eek:) new pistons, rings, block bored 20 thou oversized, new bearings all around, new valves and hardened seats, new oil pump, magnafluxed and cleaned everything, lifters and cam good, crank polished, and new gasket set. The carb has been cleaned, aaand I am getting a new alternator. This dang engine better not quit on me in the middle of the lake!!! Now on to the outdrive (more $$$$ I am sure)
Will be posting new pics, fit the insulation (flotation) in yesterday and coated the bottom of the floor with the second coat of epoxy resin yesterday. Maybe I will get the floor in tonight :D

Gotta LOVE FREE Boats !! HAHA HarHar:p

Bret you really seem to be going all out. It's good to know your engine will be ready when the hull is.;)

I have a starchief that i believe to be a little older than yours. I've got to go to the bare hull and work out from there. Do you have any advice on what floor to put in. I also am going to use pourable urethane foam to add stabilty and it helps with sound as well. Any finished pics or advice (i.e. where to get parts will help).

thanks.
