I dropped off the boat yesterday in a blizzard to have the engine, leg, etc pulled off the transom.

I'll have some pics of me pulling the transom and painting the alum on the inside if I can get my friends heated garage :)

Here's what's holding up my progress.

Here's a pic from a day and a half ago... Notice not much snow in the background.

To today...

And how to take advantage of it. Took him snowboarding right in Edmonton at Snow Valley. It's a ski hill in our river valley with snowmaking equipment...that they didn't need today.

sprintst,
Now I remember why I moved south. I really don't like that hard water. The other name for it is a four letter word I don't like to speak or type.
I still need to go further south. :p
It was a blistering 38 degrees today.
Have fun with the boat

The windshield is held down with flange bolts that side into a rail at the bottom of the windshield. Here's a pic... I added new washers and a rubber washer from Home depot.

I also posted the part numbers for replacement Perko cleats towards the end in my restore.

Thanks for the info.

More pics to come. I pick the boat up tomorrow from having the engine and leg pulled. I'll find out soon enough what shape the transom was in and the condition of anything that was hidden like the bolts, etc.

This will guarantee I'll be on the water in the summer as I'll do the transom over the Christmas break and will post all the part numbers of everything I'm ordering to get it together.

Wiring, etc I can do when it warms up in the spring then it's time to kick back in the sun :)

Anyone in their right mind would have stopped. Looks like no one can totally escape the cold if it's geting you too :) Where is global warming when you need it.

I got the boat back and there were no surprises. The transom was in really good shape around the outdrive hole as was the aluminum. It looks like there was no noticable corrosion and the transom wood looked new...except for the soft spot near where the bilge hose ran. The dough-head that put on a small piece of starboard on the transom did not seal the holes screw holes with 4200/5200 so that is where the water got into the transom creating one small spot that turned to mush.

Here's some pics of the transom opening. I temporarily screwed the transducer base into the transom wood so it wouldn't bounce around as I drove.

The dude at Tournament Ski and Marine didn't have much on the go in the blizzard and pulled everything over the weekend. Once my transom is done I will get him to bolt everything back with new parts, gaskets, etc.

As I heard he figures the old Mercruiser 140 (Iron Duke) was indestructable with only one weakness that he has heard of. The head agskets blow between cylinder 2 and 3 so he can do the head gasket as well as the replacement gaskets on the riser, etc in 3 hours or less...while the engine is out. I'll also do the water pump, impeller in the leg, maybe oil pump, engine mount bushings, drive cable, transom replacement kit with gimbal bearing, bellows, seals, etc.

Let me know if there are any other pain in the a** things to do that are easier when the engine is out.

Time to order some parts and get my 3/4 marine plywood ready for the Christmas break...

Almost froze my fingers off just getting it off the trailer. My next big thing is getting a heated garage to work in. Maybe I can use the garage of a friend whom I helped building his 3 car garage last summer :) Or the shop of the guy that I just sold my old Explorer to... It's good to have some options.

I'll organize my boat parts and take them from my shed and into the basement. It's too cold to do much else. There was a little bit of a nip in the air this morning.

Edmonton was the coldest city in North America this morning out-chilling even the Arctic with a record low of -46.1 C at the Edmonton International Airport.

And with a wind chill, the mercury dropped to nearly -59 C, said Environment Canada meteorologist John McIntyre.

The previous record for Dec. 13 was -36.1 C, set in 2008.

This morning's temperature also smashed a December record of -44.5 C, which was set on Dec. 9, 1977.

mebbe repaint the motor? nice and glossy! YEA!

I might be inclined to runa brush of resin over the transoms exposed wood edges at the mercruiser hole area

mine blew the headgasket at #2 and #3 ....Im sure its pretty common!

could check the centrifigul advance springs and see if they are real rusty...mine broke and maxed out the timing advance....ran like cr&^ might be a bit easier if the eng is out to check those out...mebbe replace the poiints and regap? new ign wires too and plugs?

should be in top form for summer!

Rock on

Sprint those temps are uninhabitable;) In Michigan we get to -10F once in a while, you really can't breathe air at -30C without freezing your avioli can ya:D

Good luck with the project this winter, hope that iron duke runs well for ya this summer:)

sprintst,
My car won't even let me out long before it gets that cold. At least that's what I tell my son. :p
The only way I want to see ice, is in my drink with one of those little umbrellas. :D:D

I'll definately do the head gasket and the distributor innards, plug wires, hose, etc.

Here's the start of my planning session. No ice cubes in the drink but I think you can see the slush in there from the frosted class.

Here's some of my parts in the basement. Cabosil, sawdust, street force waterproof epoxy sealed led lights, Jabsco 3" flange mount blower #351150020

The Sea Ray JR 600B salt water battery terminals look to be made of brass versus the non salt water version. The Marpac take apart motor box hinges were cool part number 7-0211. I should be able to lift the motor box up and pull it to the side to totally unhinge it for better engine access.

The Attwood pole storage clips will bold my stern light pole when it's stowed. The Maglight clips will hold the 4 D cell flashlight until it's needed for lighting or to some unsavoury types a thumping.

Wrong size blower hose of course. Anyone want to swap my 4" hose for 3" Just send me 3" and I'll send you 4"

Here's an old Starcraft Faria guage set I bought on e-bay last summer.

I'm looking to swap my guages out for these.
