Re: carb vacum leak on 5.5 what to do?

so im thinking that i could use a thicker gasket.

the leak is definatley at the base of the carb/manifold area. i shot some carb cleaner around the base of the carb. when i sprayed the upper area, the engine still ran, when i sprayed the lower area the engine stopped. imho, that is the location of the vacum leak.

i am not giving up.............. i tried to find a oring the size of the manifold, but having a hard time keeping the oring in place when tighting up the carb,

Let's not go hobbling things together. Forget the o-ring. What is the problem? Is it that the carb won't push back far enough to seat against the manifold or are you running out of threads on the stud before the carb is tight?

If its an issue of clearance, figure out where the carb is contacting. If its the stud threads then use some lock washers before the nut as previously mentioned.

wbeaten,
that is correct. the carb will not seat all the way flush against the manifold. when the bolts are tightend (2) the carb has a small gap between the manifold. small space, maybe .05 or so. just enough to allow some air into the fuel mix.

the motor runs great at higher rpms, but when throttled down to slow speed, it stalls and dies, and runs semi rough. the slow idle doesnt quite run like a sewing machine. as stated earlier, i shoot some carb cleaner and it stalls.

in the throttle position, high is great, shift is pretty good, anything lower and she stalls.

i found out why the carb leaked, the base is warped. when i finally got it flat, the base was so thin the base cracked when i reinstalled the carb. its been awhile since i have played with the motor.
now i am waiting for a replacement carb i bought off ebay.
patiently waiting:redface:
