Re: 77 Evinrude 55hp stalls suddenly

There is a good chance that you need a new water pump impeller. Don't know if the engine sat for a few years or is someone ran it dry. I use one of those infrared thermometers for checking the heads. Just point, pull the trigger and get a instant digital readout. I think your motor should read between 140-170. I used to be a HVAC contractor before I retired so some of that stuff that fills my shop still comes in handy. A new impeller is a lot cheaper than new pistons and boring skuffed cylinders. Usually an easy job for anyone who doesn't have to turn a screwdriver both ways to see which way it tightens :) Once you get over 115hp or so it can be a two person job just due to the weight of the lower end and making sure everything lines up.

The installation of the tell tale should help with that diagnosis, is that correct?
I am not fortunate enough to have a temp gun laying around...(would be cool though)... I would think if the pressure is good from the tell tale, the impeller should be ok.....??

Yes and no, the tell tale will let you know there is water being pumped, but not how much, at what pressure, or if its flowing through the block and doing any cooling. Changing an old impellor, or one of unknown condition, is always a good idea, plus its easy and cheap.

You can pick up a small IR thermometer at Harbor Freight for $9.99 on sale.

Sounds good, thank you...
I have a harbor freight just up the street...WooHoo!!

I didn't realize the impeller's were as cheap as they are...$30.00... I'll go ahead and spend the 30, and save $$$$??? in the future...

Thanks again

Well, tried it again today with the new power pack, after stall, the temp read 195F...(kinda hot...?)... Used the IR Thermometer from Harbor Freight...(LOVE that place!!)...The telltale was blowing water pretty well, but if that is too hot, water pump is next....
What do you think??

At 195F its in the meltdown zone. It can be the thermostat too and again they're cheap. I'd pull the stat cover off and check everything.

Re: 77 Evinrude 55hp stalls suddenly

I changed the stat Friday (STUCK in the slightly open position), but still overheating...
I am wondering if I put the PR Valve in backwards... it fell out when I removed the head cover...
I installed it with the beveled edge toward the head/seal (flat side against the spring)
Also noticed the telltale was squirting pretty warm water at idle...that normal?

Checked the impeller today... Looks fine to me.....

And thank you very much for your help!

Re: 77 Evinrude 55hp stalls suddenly

Finally got it...!!! :D

It was the stator.... When I replaced it, I noticed while putting the flywheel back on, that there was a BIG difference in the magnetism of the new one (almost pulled it down on my fingers)...Whereas the old one did not do that.

Ran it for 90 min...NO PROBLEMS... with new impeller, the temp was down around 160F.

Thank you for the help!
