Can anybody tell me how to replace the transom boot on a 1980 OMC Stringer 400 (120 HP)?
Can this be done by only removing the sterndrive?
Does the engine have to be removed?

All you have to do is to remove the sterndrive. I have heard of others that have stretched it over the drive while in place but never tried that myself.

To my knowledge you do not need to remove the sterndrive to replace the transom seal. You'll want to use some sealant like 3M 5200 on your screws/holes so water won't leak in and rot your transom

F14,

You have done it this way? When I did it, it was with the older electric shift but I did not try to stretch it over the drive. It was just easier to remove the drive. With the newer stringers, youhave the shift cable to worry about so not quite as simple as mine.

I replaced mine without taking off the drive, I've got a 1975 800 elec. shift. Only took about 1/2 hour to get the old one off and new one on. Just use a little soap on the boot to help it slip over the drive and a little care and it goes on fairly easy. Use a good sealant for the screw holes.

I too was able to get my old boot off without removing the outdrive. i have a 78 OMC 800, had to take off the whale tail and use some elbow grease. Good call on teh soapy water, that would have made it much easier, i'll remember that when i install the new one.

I'm replacing the boot on an OMC 800 Stinger installation. Haven't taken the old one off yet.....can you tell me how the inside of the boot is captured on the stern drive itself??

Thanks!

Big stainless steel clamp around the intermediate housing. You attach it to the housing first with the clamp and then screw it onto the stern.
