Re: Starcraft project: "STOLEN" PAINTED!!! PIC UPDATE 7-12-09

I skipped the piece on the outer transom. Didn't appear to serve much purpose and it looks nicer without it. I'm on my 2nd season without it to no ill effect. I'm also pretty sure you don't want to use PT on there. If you do reinstall it (I really wouldn't) definitely 5200 the edge and around all the holes.

I'd use staples AND adhesive for the vinyl.

well, the main reason I was going to install it was to hide all the freakin holes. the origional motor had 9 holes to bolt the motor... 4 for the motor bracket and 5 for for the power trim brackets. they are a bit big to just fill, and i really cant afford to pay someone to weld in plugs...

what would you do about the holes??

so should i skip the pt for the side panels as well and go with ex grade ply coated with resin instead???

Hmm that is a lot of holes. Maybe you should replace it. Not with PT. If you have a way to source a nice piece of aluminum that would be ideal.

The PT should be fine for your side panels as they aren't going to probably have darn near any contact with the metal with the vinyl on them. Mine are PT.

what would you say is better for the side panels, pt or resin coated ex grade? i can get the ex grade for hald the price of pt and have enough leftover resin.

aluminum is out for the outer transom... can i use straight non resin coated ex grade ply and just have to deal with replacing it every so often? i would think that if i resin coated it the resin might crack...

If you cant cancell the PT order..I'd use that for the panels..
Its not going to be in contact with the actuall hull

The transom,
I think you should go ex grade, resin and glass matted tho bud.
Others that know more should fill ya in on the straight scoop..

Re: Starcraft project: "STOLEN" PAINTED!!! PIC UPDATE 7-12-09

Here's my problem (and my experience) with that "transom plate". You can decide what you want to do with yours based on this information.

When I got my boat that plate was completely rotten and was all nasty and the plys separating. I believe that when the plate failed it allowed water to get to the motor mounting holes and other holes underneath it which rotted out the transom.

Before I knew much about boats I decided to replace the plate mainly cuz it looked bad. I didn't replace my transom at the time because some previous owner of my boat had reinforced it with a huge piece of angle iron. Anyway I took a piece of PT ply and coated it with poly resin.

A year later I decided to do the job right and really replace my transom. When I took everything apart again (can you believe I did this twice? I'm such a tard) the resin had already failed on the plate and the force of the motor had warped the plate a bit. This is why I decided not to replace it.

I also had a number of holes to fill and I just globbed some JB Weld on them once the new transom was installed. However this didn't work that well because the JB didn't have anything to really grab onto once I sanded them smooth. You can see the outline of the holes. It's working for now but not a great solution.

SOOOO my conclusion is that a big ol piece of diamond plate would be the best solution possible. Otherwise, I would take a piece of exterior ply and fully glass and resin that sucker so it's a nice, hard, rigid plate. And 5200 the sh!t out it when you install it.

Yeah Andy, A peice of diamond plate or even some like 1/4" flat stock cut nice would look danged good. then you could shot all them holes with sealant and 5200 the edges befor you bolt it on. shouldn't cost much at all.

NB, I will be in this situation soon. When you say flat stock do you mean aluminum?

Re: Starcraft project: "STOLEN" PAINTED!!! PIC UPDATE 7-12-09

well i decided to go with ex grade ply glassed for the tramsom. i can always change it later. got alot done today actually...

got my side panels cut out and coated with resin

and my boy got the first coat of paint on the floor

i also got my transom piece cut out and one side glassed... plus got the splashwell primered and i had to do some trimming of the transom itself to get the cap to fit right... then hit the raw cut with some resin. all in all was a pretty productive day.

oh ya, and the side panels were 8 ft exactly!!!! so now i have an extra piece of 1/2" ply... dont know what to do with it!

Re: Starcraft project: "STOLEN" PAINTED!!! PIC UPDATE 7-12-09

i got luck my side panels are salvageable on my boat and there like 12 feet long i was like here im gonna get 12 foot plywood lol. the did a insteresing lap seam from the factory with some sorta epoxy goop but its holding strong ill just be rewrapping mine. yours are shapped the same as my 1980 SS i did a few years ago. the ones in my boat now dont turn up at the front like that there just straight. progress is looking sweet!

Looking good Andy . I actually just got done with the last of 4 coats of primer on the other side of my boat tonight . I had Zinc'd it before I left for Fla. Tonight was the first chance I got to touch it again other than playing Mexican Boat dance yesterday moving boats around to get the one I sold out LOL. Hopefully tomorrow 2 coats of Red then its time to flip her over :D:D.

Re: Starcraft project: "STOLEN" PAINTED!!! PIC UPDATE 7-12-09

well, i had to dj a wedding yesterday so i didnt get anything done... figures too because we actually had nice weather.

so let me tell you about this wedding i did... first of all there were a grand total of 25-30 teeth total (not including me). someone was actually wearing crocs... towards the end of the night there was a guy on the dance floor with a bottle of vodka in one hand and red bull in the other... who needs a glass to mix a drink. swig from one then the other! and the icing on the cake was at one point i played gretchen wilson "redneck woman" and the bride (who had a beer (can) in one hand and cigarette in the other) came running from outside screaming "TURN IT UP THIS IS MY SONG!!!"

Oh, and some guy asked me if i wanted to go smoke weed out back with him (i declined)...

it was interesting. but the good news is that i played for 3 extra hours and got a $50 tip, so i made 200 bucks more than i was expecting. i may pick up some durabak and possibly a tach while im in burlington today...
