Good job Andy..
I wish I had that many old tires around for mine..

If she a little wobbly...you can use a car jack and use some of that firewood ya may have laying around..

Thats only if you are going to have to get IN the boat while she's sans trailer.

it actually is wobbly, but on the starboard side there is a piece of decking board propping it up at the chine.

so i plundered some booty today... a 30 gal gas tank and filler neck and it has a sending unit in it but i dont know if it works...

1) how can i test the sending unit?

2) i took the controld off it, they are right side mounted on a center console for an OMC outboard... they are complete with harness, lanyard and have the trim switch on it. i want to sell it on ebay, but i done have the slightest clue what it will fit. where do i start?

Connect a multi-meter to the contacts of the sending unit and watch the resistance (ohms) as you rotate the tank to get the sending unit arm to fall one way, then the other. The resistance should change...at least I "think" that's how they work :D

i tinkered with it the day after i bought it, and couldnt get it to fire... but i have faith. im going to work on it some more maybe next week... but i have to get my firewood finished first... my rule is not to work on the boat until the wood is done and i havent really adhered to it so far this year!

and yes, i got the pm about the trailer... if you still have it early summer i may come take a look at it...

ive been saying for a few years now that i am going to get a year ahead, but usually doesnt materialize... i work too slow. its just me and my 10 year old doing 90% of the work, so we really cant process that much. we burn about 8 full cord a year so it requires a few trees. usually we cut on my father in laws land, but with his desicion to let the loggers come in and chip most of it, we ordered a log load this year... 6 1/2 cord for $800... so i just have to finish cutting and splitting that (about 3 cords left) and im good for next year with what we had cut last summer thats already stacked.

im going to order another log load in the fall for 2011-2012...

I don't get it. $800 plus all the work to split it and stack it and burn it clean up after it versus an extra $100-150 a month extra on the electric or gas bill. (just wondering)

Jeremy, our house is an 1892 built farmhouse, 2x4 construction (limiting insulation) and a cold basement and no heat run to the second floor. when we heated with oil, last season was 2006 when fuel oil was right around 2 bucks a gallon it cost us $3800 to keep out house at a balmy 65. in 3 years the 6k we spent on furnace and stainless steel chimney liner have paid for themselves. up until now we cut all our own wood. i did the calculations once, and the actual cost of a cord of wood for me was like 12 bucks or something and that was for gas for truck, chainsaw and splitter. even by buying at 800 for a 6 1/2 cord load and cutting another 2 ourselves we are saving ALOT of money, considering fuel oil is about 2.90 right now.

besides that, i actually enjoy the work. ya its hard work, but i dont get much excercise to begin with. plus me and my boy actually work pretty well together doing it, so we get to spend some time together just us.

and nothing beats wood heat... its a totally different kind of warmth. we can get that baby crankin and get the house around 75 in the middle of jan when its -20 outside and sit on the couch in shorts and a t shirt.

Add in the three times the warmth value...once cutting, once stacking and once burning....no better heat imo! Add in the romantic mood setter for those ..ahem.. moments, and it doesn't get any better ;)

I am with ya!

It's me v. the propane guy, and I win every year!

The lp furnace only comes on a few times a year when I'm not home to feed the wood furnace.

I go through about 6 cords of wood per winter, and, all my wood is free (minus equipment and fuel costs of course). I don't mind the work, nope, not one bit.

I figure I save roughly $3000 per winter in lp costs. If I worked really hard, it would take me, by myself, a long weekend to cut, split and stack 6 cords. I always spread the work out though. No brainer for me!!!

It sure is a good feeling when I actually have two years worth of wood (12 cords) seasoning in the sun. I look out and think, "man, that is about $6000 dollars saved right there! Yah baby!:D:D

minus the romantic aspect... i have a mammoth wood furnace in the basement... so no cuddling by the fire. my wife isnt fond of dirt floors, spiders and mice. total mood killer for her.

Just wondering - are you planning on moving this thread to the "Completed projects" archive so it doesn't get lost?

I figured your answer would probably have something to do with heating oil. That stuff is killer. I know I would not even consider a house that was heated by oil. And you may be too cold up there for a heat pump to work well. Down here though.....if I had a house with an oil burner and didn't have access to the natural gas grid, I'd have a heat pump installed and be done with it. I think my gas bills are pretty reasonable at $120-140 a month but the people I know with all electric aren't even adding that much per month to their electric bill in the winter.

My old house was a 100 year old row house. It had one of those octopus coal furnaces in the basement that had been converted to gas. One winter I had a $350 gas bill for 1 month (and that was like 8 years ago!). The next winter I had a brand new 80% efficient furnace installed for only around $1500 and my gas bills dropped to like $120.

Re: Starcraft project: "STOLEN" PIC UPDATE 7-31-09 COMPLETED!!

no natural gas here... the closest we can get is bottled lp gas. even at that, with a high efficiency furnace, we are still at a disadvantage because of the fact that there is no heat run to the second floor but 1 duct in our bedroom. we debated back and forth on this for a few months befure pulling the trigger on the wood furnace. we could have gotten a high efficiancy gas furnace for less, but would still be paying monthly. and remember heating season here is from september to june. usually we see lows at night down in the 40's by mid sept until early june. last year there was 3 or 4 mornings from mid june into july that i had to get a fire going... 4th of july the low was 47...

It sure makes perfect sense to me Andy...the task of cutting, splitting, stacking and carting around wood has always seemed more like fun than work to me:D

Working with chainsaws? nooo...playing with chainsaws!

My folks burn wood primarily in a self-standing ceramic wood-burning stove and it's very efficient. Plus all the tree we cut down and burn are mature and they would only rot anyways and be worthless.

My next house will absolutely have a fireplace and it will be used quite a bit.

I agree...after you get that 85hp running you should post a completed resto thread. The starcrafts will be well represented in that forum soon:)

i would stay away from a fireplace if possible and go with a small free standing wood stove. fireplaces should be treated as a decoration and any fires in them should be for ambience only... they really dont throw any heat, and in some cases can actually suck some of the heat out of the room!
