Will this primer work for priming aluminum? http://secure2.data-comm.com/servlet/RBIS/-strse-93624/Primer-Yellow-1-G/Detail It doesn't mention aluminum in the description. Will this stick to existing paint without a problem? I am using benjamin moore m22 urethane alkyd as a top coat. I currently have a self etching primer (two part auto), but don't want to spend the extra time removing ALL of the existing paint, since it has to be used on bare metal...

Zinc Chromate does come in yellow and green. It says Zinc Chromate and yes that is what you need for aluminum.

You only need zinc chromate on bare aluminum.

I'm re-thinking my painting scheme as well. My Interlux stuff is about 75 a quart but is meant for epoxies.

Your combo would definately save me a bunch of cash and I've seen a number of people using the Bejamin Moore stuff with good results as well...

Lightly sand or scuff the old paint using sandpaper or steel wool, use the primer on bare spots. Zinc chromate/phosphate primers are what you need for aluminum...read and follow label directions.

Total cost for paint and primer was $120. And that's for 3 gallons! One white, one navy blue, and one of primer. Should be enough to repaint a couple times!

I used 1 can per side on my Jupiter V 16'er I figure 1-2 on the bottom and the top will be less than a can so thts 5 cans all together. I got mine at Napa.

I've got an 18.5' deep V, so I may use a few more cans. Still waiting for Rustoleum's response. I've got quite a bit of paint to remove before I start to prime so I'll see what they have to say before I but anything else. Thanks for the responses.

BoatDr my Jupiter is 16' so you may not use much more than I am planning to use maybe 1 spray can but your only 2 feet longer and possibly a little taller. I will add if your paint isnt in bad shape you may not need to remove it just sand it down and repaint . I had to remove a peeling layer that was covering the original paint on mine and most of the hull was stripped when I got her other than the bottom which I am doing now spent 4+ hours today with the random orbit sander and half a box of 60 grit paper :D. I managed to get one side done tomorrow I do the other side and wednesday we start painting . I hope to have her back on the trailer this weekend :D.

I think I need to take most of it off. The bottom has like 3 layers of different colors of paint, all of which seem to be chipping to some extent. Looks like she's been repainted poorly before. There were tons of tiny areas of bare aluminum, a little larger than a pinhead, all over the entire boat...probably air bubbles. No peeling paint though. I have both sides and the transom down close to bare metal and all of the seam rivets and a few more on the bottom that I could reach with a wire wheel...boy was that fun! Dreading sanding the bottom and may just go buy some paint stripper. I'm heading out now to sand the topside and maybe drop the transom in if the Gluvit has cured enough. Still need to drop her off at the welding shop so they can fix some poor work they did...but hopefully will start painting tomorrow or Thursday.

LOL ooooooooh yeah the wire wheel on the rivets there must be 5 million of them :D. I picked up a 3/4" wire wheel that does a great job on the rivets without marring everything around them .
