im working on a 1987 celebrity with a mercruiser 175 and alpha 1 outdrive. the guy that brought it to me said it needed a ignition moduel well that wasnt the case found the wires un hooked. the problem im haveing is fuel related. i took the carb apart and cleaned it plus a new filter checked all the lines everything was clean when i put it back together. it will start up fun but wont idle unless i work the throttle to keep it running. would that be caused from a weak fuel pump? i just cant track down this bug.

Re: fuel issue

check for sticky linkage, proper throttle cable adjustment. idle air/fuel mixture may cause this. vacuum leak somewhere. timing advanced too far.

Re: fuel issue

i checked the dist and it has never been touched the paint hasnt even been chipped off. all linkages are free. i have already done the starting fluid test for vaccume leaks and didnt find any. it has ran this way since i got it running.

Re: fuel issue

was the intake manifold checked on all sides for vacuum leaks? at 1000rpm's, the starting fluid trick is harder to determine. water out of a squirt bottle MIGHT work better. accelerator pump might be checked as well, if carb is equipped.

Re: fuel issue

yes it is carbed it will run when the choke is on but as soon as it opens it stalls.

Re: fuel issue

that tells alot. with choke on, motor is starved of air. stalling when choke comes off, idling around 1000 rpm, all is indicative of too much air getting in. lack of fuel, motor would more likely sputter, die. start from beginning again, just to make sure one little thing wasn't overlooked. all carb gaskets installed right. proper mounting gasket used. proper float level, proper accelerator pump and spring, proper air fuel mix, all carb linkage moves freely, doesnt stick. all vacuum lines are installed in their proper place, unused ports are plugged. pull carb if all else fails, make sure the butterflies are not getting stuck on mounting gasket. it's happened before. it really sounds like vacuum leak, bad linkage,

Re: fuel issue

i did notice the float is sticking alot. i havent rebuilt the carb persay but just took it apart and cleaned it. im getting a rebuild kit tomorrow and start over with that. what else should i look for. i havent changed plugs yet but i have new ones to put in it also i just didnt put them in cause it starts up realy easy just doesnt idle on its own.

Re: fuel issue

spray out/blow out every single port, crevice, nook and cranny in carb. pull jets as well, clean them out, and their passage. take your time, make it right the first time. follow every spec exact, and if you're not sure, ask. if current plugs are running good, leave them. focus on proper carb rebuild, go from there. good luck.

Re: fuel issue

After you tear down the carb organize everything neatly and be very clean use old parts for comparison and soak all parts but plastic in carb soak over nite and then wash them with soapy water and blow out off all pieces w/ compressed air and repeat and as maxman said take your time and follow all specs to a T I think it will solve all your issues. A little trick to use is wipe the surfaces of your new gaskets with vasiline so in case you have to pull it apart again they wont stick to the mating surfaces just a light coat no excess! Good luck!!
