Usually a tag/decal on the HVAC box or core support detailing that information.

it takes what it takes to get your high and low pressures correct. Really you need a factory service manual and a set of gauges to do it correctly.

Take the time and get the spec from a dealer if no one here knows for sure.
Filling by gauge pressure is very tricky as ambient temperature and humidity will dramatically affect your readings and must be factored into your pressures.

I would guess it would be between 1.5 - 2 lbs. but best find out for sure!

Nandy there will be a service tag most likely on your core support . Do you have a way to pull a vacuum on the system after you change the compressor? You need to put a vacuum on it before recharging it to make sure theres no moisture in the system.

The information you are looking for should be on the sticker atop your radiator or on the sticker under the hood. Look up when you have the hood open.

Rick, there is a $12 dollar vacuum machine I can get from harbor freight. It dont have the hoses so I have to find those.
I will check where y'all say the information should be.
Thanks!

it will have to have a oil charge added to it also,im not aware of a vacum pump that will do the needed # for that kind of $,you might want to read up some more before you start,it might save you money to have it done? :) ,mike243

the air powered vac pumps from harbor freight will work, but they are noisy, and you need a compressor that can deliver the CFM that they require to do the job. as for the amount needed, there will be a sticker under the hood that gives the exact spec. Keep in mind that if you are doing a system with R12, that it is controlled, and gauges and hoses may not be the easiest thing to get ahold of. Consider doing a full system flush (should do this after a compressor failure anyways) and converting to R134a. this is uncontrolled, and the gauges and refrigerant are much easier to get ahold of.

It is a R134, the label says it takes 1.43 lbs -/+ .11lbs. Will grainger have those hoses? right now that is my hold up and the fact I have not bougth the compressor yet... way too many things happening at this time...

for an R134 system, hoses should be available at your local auto parts store, Heck, I think even wally world carries them. Grainger will also most likely have them as well

heck, trip on down to the harbor freight store and pick up a set of chineeze gauges. They're no RobinAir's but they're cheap enough and then you'll have a set you need them. Also, dont forget to get a can tap.

It being a 94 you can use the 134a. They didnt use r-12 in 94. 3 to 4 cans should do it but replacing the dryer and pulling a vacum using guages will make the repair last longer. If its a beater car hell just put the compressor on and then see how much freon it will suck in to start being cold. Put in 2 cans first and run it for a few minutes and the add can number 3. Once it gets good and cool STOP or you will blow out the system. This is the shade tree/cheopo way and add a can of the freon that has the refrigerate OIL to lube the new compressor.

If the compressor failed mechanically, there may be debris spread throughout the system. If this has happened, you will have to rethink this whole repair as it has escalated into a major project. Are there any sight glasses in the system? If not, remove the compressor and drain the oil. If it is cloudy or fillings are present, you have a major contamination. The compressor may have failed from its own weakness or was murdered by dessicant which has broken down and is passing through the system. In either case, it could be a major undertaking to do it right. :(
