New Boater, with an old problem!

So first off let me say that I am completely new to boating. I recently moved to coastal NC and have wanted to get into boating. My father has an old 17' Crestliner with a 75 hp Evinrude outboard. This was his fathers before he passed away back in the 80's. The boat has been used very little since then (maybe 3-4 times?).
So from what I can remember, and what my father told me about them trying to run it last year is that the motor is having some issues. It idles good and runs good to ~50% throttle, then it just dies. Now it sat for years so I am guessing the carbs are gummed up bad, I remember trying some carb/choke cleaner way back when but that not doing anything. I am wondering what you all thing are my options as far as getting this boat going again.
Although inexperienced with boat motors I have rebuilt ATV motors/carbs, and older car motors so I am ok in the garage. The boat and motor around probably early 80's (80-82?) or maybe even late 70's. I won't be up to NY to pick it up for another month so wanted to start doing some research. Sorry i dont have exact years I know that would be a big help, hopefully my dad calls back soon to let me know.

Have your Dad give you exact model #, that will tell you what year. Buy a manual on the motor, it will pay for itself a hundred times over if you are mechanical. Probably want to rebuild carb, replace fuel filter & pump, impeller, plugs, etc.

First off, welcome to the boating community! This forum is a lifesaver, especially when dealing with older equipment which tends to need more 'massaging' to get back into the proper running order. What's the condition of the trailer if you plan on pulling it to NC? Once its there, you can work on the boat at leisure, but getting it there safely on a trailer thatsbeen sitting a long time may be more of an issue.. I'd replace the tires, get a spare, and service the wheel bearings before making a long haul, then check your lighting. Any problems on the road, & your at 'whatever help you can get's' mercy price wise.. Good luck, & enjoy..

The trailer is good. My father put 4 new bearings and 4 new tires on last year when they were messing around with the boat. Thanks for all the suggestions and links. I will definately rebuild the carbs, and the other things mentioned.

So I have the model number now. It is 70573 E which I see is a 1975. I am going to order a manual and I want to order the carb rebuild kits. Are either of these my best choices?

yes either that or definetly decarb with seafoam.... after you get the boat running if that didnt fix the problem you might have some ignition/timing issues... keep us updated
