Propeller Locks

I'm looking into a lock for my propeller and am leaning toward the McGard prop lock. However a service tech at one of the local boat dealers recommends not using one of these prop locks because if they seize up the unlocking device won't work and the locking device has to be cut off with a torch. Has anyone heard of this type of problem?

That's why you remove them frequently and check for proper operation.

Apparently this question fell into the "stupid question" category. Are these locks commonly used and have a favorable reputation or are they avoided by those in the know?

Very rare to see one where I boat...they almost make it impossible to change your prop, if needed, while on the water.

Not to mention, that I believe that the McGard doesn't have the ability to use the locking tab pieces....

Re: Propeller Locks

That's a good point about trying to change the prop while on the water. In reality the lock would only be needed at times when we are going a long distance and have to stay the night in a hotel. It should be easy enough to just use it when in transit and then change it out when we are home or at the destination.
Thanks for the help

Or just remove the good prop and install a guard on the shaft of an old junk prop.

That's an interesting idea. Mounting a junker prop on it with the guard should serve to reduce or eliminate the temptation to steal it in the first place.
