Hi,

My 73' 65 HP Johnson is starting really hard when its cold. Not sure what the deal is - it almost sounds like its flooded. When I turn it over I have to turn it over for 20 - 25 seconds before it starts. It sounds like it wants to start but it just doesn't happen easily.

Any thoughts? My first instinct tells me carb but could this be ignition also? BTW when it is warmed up it starts on the first half crank.

Thanks,
Andy

Thanks for the response.

Yes I have been following that procedure. I have the key operated choke as mentioned in the procedure. I believe the choke is working. It sounds like a carb issue but as I said I really am not sure.

How easy should the motor start when cold? I am assuming it is like any other motor and should start within 3-5 seconds of turning it over am I wrong?

Are there any common things I can check and eliminate right away?
