I am getting the "Glitter" affect when my Glaston ski boat is in the water. Ive got a 1982 75 hp Evinrude. It runs great out of the water with muffs on and throught all gears forward and reverse. Then...I put it in the water and Its tought to start and when I get it going it will go forward and reverse till I give it throttle and it bogs down and dies. Ive tried choke and an it dies. After about a half hour (after its warmed up) I can give it a little throttle an speed up a little tiny bit but then it will sputter a little. I just did a compression test and got #1 cylinder-119lbs/ #2 cylinder-109lbs/ #3 cylinder-110lbs.
Will a decarb help?
The bottom end has a plate with 4 bolts by the trim assy on both sides. and one is broke on one side and one missing on the other. What is it?

Any help is Greatly appreciated cause Ive got a family thats going nuts to get back on the lake!

oh and the guy I bought it from said a gear in the bottom end is why it wont go full speed. Dont remeber what he called it but said it was a "$25 part" haaha. Maybe a thrust bearing?

Sounds like you have a plugged carb(s), and they will need to be disassembled and rebuilt...

It's not a hard job and parts are pretty inexpensive @ iboats.... :D

A decarb may help, but you won't know if the carbs are plugged with anything such as a fuel line that may be coming apart due to the newer fuel blend which is causing older fuel lines to break down and plug up things such as a carb....

If it's sputtering fuel you may have an issue with the needle and seat assembly, the float may be set wrong or the float itself is bad and is sinking rather than floating....

Tapping on the bowl only works if the needle and seat are stuck, it's a okay troubleshooting technique but if that "fixes" the problem I would still pull it apart and replace the needle and seat as tapping is only a temporary fix if it works at all IMO...

Ok Ill take the top carb off and replace the needle an seat. Ill let you know what happens. Im also gonna change my fuel line/bulb and get a LOOONG needed manual.

So whats causing the glitter effect in the lake? Is it cause of the fuel leaking from the carb? or somthing else?

If the "Glitter effect" is a reflective sheen then what you are seeing is unburnt fuel/oil floating on the surface... I would only imagine you would see this when idling or running relatively slow?

I took the carbs back off and the top one had some black debis in it. Then started it with muffs and its only half as bad now. Im gonna put it in the water an see what happens.

Did I hear someone say it was normal for oil residue to be coming out around the prop?

It is normal to have oil residue coming from the prop as that's the main exhaust for the engine. As long as the oil that is there doesn't smell like gear lube, your okay... If it does smell like gear lube, then you likely have a lower end seal leak @ the prop shaft...

If your carbs had black debris in it, it's likely your fuel lines are coming apart and will continue to plug the carbs until you change them....

Im sure you are right about that. I changed my fuel lines when I rebuilt my carbs. Thats what I thought it was. Ill take it to the lake tomorrow an see what happens. Its gonna need LOTA luck!

Re: 82 75hp Evinrude problems *HELP*

After doing intensive research and Selco manual reading I pulled the top carb back off. I found the float wasnt sitting level with the carb. I adjusted it to hang level. Then I bent then bent the tab on the hinge to adjust it hanging 3/4". Reinstalled everything and no gas sputtering out!!!! The timing is off now an it seems to be getting too much fuel cause its backfiring a little. Im gonna put it in the lake an see what happens. Will the timing be different when its in the water? I heard your supposed to time it when in the lake and not with muffs. true?

thank all!

Unfortunately, IMO, enough fiddling has been done that you should perform a complete link n sync of the carbs as well as set the timing...

I perfer the Reeves method of setting the timing myself...

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=228183

Timing should be the same if the boat is in the water or out, the engine doesn't know if it's floating.... ;)

I believe your thinking of the idle speed as that will vary on the muffs vs. in the water as it can be as much as 300 rpm lower when it's in the water due to the exhaust back pressure caused by the water...

Good luck, you'll get there, just be patient....

Is there a link and sync post? It seems kina confusing in the manual. Thanks for the pointers!

You are right about the adjusting the RPM in the water and not the timing.

BTW the pointer on the engine says to set timing 19 deg. So at full throttle set at 15 deg? What about a spark tester. How do you rig one of them up?
Thankyou

Re: 82 75hp Evinrude problems *HELP*

If anyone is still following this :confused::confused: I took it to the lake after changing the fuel line/bulb, fuel tank, fuel, and fuel lines and still dies when I throttle up. The ONLY thing I didnt change was the Fuel pump (hard to find and not at www.iboats.com) I found one on ebay and when I get it Ill try it. This is getting REAL EXPENSIVE and any pointers/help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED :D:D

Remember I rebuilt all 3 carbs, adjusted the floats properly, new battery, fuel lines, fuel, tank.

HELP!!!!!!!!

Thought this might help, check that all three butterflies open simultaneously, it's best to open air box and actually see that all three open together ! ?
