I recently replaced impeller and cannot get water to come through the tell tail hole. When i put hose to tail hole, water comes out the leg. when I put hose to the impeller housing water comes out the tell tail hole. when I assemble and test while running in a barrel, nothing. Water tube doenst appear to be blocked. When I run in a barrel water sputters out the exhaust grid on the leg and I can feel exhaust pressure comming from tail tell but no water. I'm stuck and need help. This is my only motor and need to get it going.

the impellers fins aren't directional. I don't think I could do it backwards.

Figured out the problem, I took the whole lower end off, and the tube. There where almost three whole empeller fins stuck in there. I woulda done it sooner, but those screws haven't been turned in 58 years. Made it alittle difficult. Anyway problem solved.

Re: 1951 elgin 5hp impeller questions

I just bought a 1952 elgin 5hp and replaced the impeller. I have ran it a few times and it seems to be pumping water but i didn?t know there was a tell tail hole. Where is this located so I can see how well my pump is working?

Thank you

Great! But you might not be out of the woods yet. Keep a close check on operating temp since there could still be chunks of impeller lodged in internal passages in the water jacket.

Your experience is a perfect illustration of why I harp on changing impellers as soon as you get an old motor and regularly thereafter!

The hole is actually a missing section out of the exhaust cover gasket on the side of the powerhead. It is more or less on the bottom/forward corner of the cover.

Hey, don't feel bad, they are most always pluggged up from moss and crud in the water.
