Hey Guys,

I got alot of the bugs worked out, THANKS mainly due to the help that I received on these forums.

I got this boat 2 years ago, and have put alot of time in, to get it to this point. I can't thank you guys enough.

I made this video clip (less than 10 mins long) from photos taken along the way. I am no computer wiz, so I struggled with this as well. Some of the earlier photos are pretty crappy, as I didn't have a digital cam, so I tried to scan them.

This is also, for the OMC guys out there, and for my family that has put up with my non-stop efforts of getting this boat, the Jesse Rae ( named for my daughter), on the water for the first season.

It is a much better video, if you DL it, and play with windows media player.

Let me know what you think....

Thanks again for all the help.

Wow, what a great post. All I can say is you're a better man than I. Love the kids in the fork lift and was the music from the Allman Brothers?

Dude, you've got your own forklift? Sweet! You're my new best friend! :D

Seriously though thanks for the great pics. I LOL'd when I saw the pics of the nice bright shiny white upper gearcase stuck in that beat to h@ll, multi-colored drive! :D It needed to be a minute or so longer to show the final re-intallation and test drive though. It's like a cliffhanger, when's the ending?! :D

Wow, that's a lot of work. It's sure nice to have some room and a fork lift! MY poor cabin cruiser barely fits in my driveway. Did you get a trailer for your boat? How did you get it home? How did you get it onto a trailer?

Re: 1976 OMC 235 HP Windows Media Video

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the positive feedback, as well as the forum help.

The tune is " Back Where It All Begins " from the album " Where It All Begins", by the surviving Allman Bros. ( Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe ) recorded , I think, live in 1994.

I wish that was my own forklift. I am a union steamfitter (boiler builder, pipe welder, etc) but I really am "kept" by 1 company that I have been with for many years. It is thier's , but they drop it off and let me use it.

On the very first, maiden voyage, I went alone. I didn't want to subject any friends or loved ones to the unlimited possibal problems that could arise with a 33 year old, untried (by me), beaten and neglected boat. I really didn't take any pics. I was travellin' light, it would be a long "walk" back to shore. Ha Ha.

The boat is on my mooring, it runs great, but the more that I am using it, the more things I find that need my attention. I am looking at this season as a "shake down" season. See what I got, what does it need, etc. I have been fishing with my kids, which is EXACTLY what is was all about.

When I got the boat, I had to have a transporter haul it back to my home. I gave my previous boat ( a 1975 winner viscount 21' cuddy with a 1979 115 HP inline 6, mercury outboard ) away but kept the shoreliner trailer. I added another axle and suspension, but it really isn't quite enough to really handle this boat with confidence. I can move the boat around my shop and home. I did have it hauled when I put it in , in April, but I did sneak down in the night with this trailer and pulled the boat when I had to repair my tilt worm gear shaft cap, and take care of the clutch pack.

In that slide show, there are two different points where I had it running , out of the boat. When you see it on a welded up stand/ rack. artificial stringer thing. Where you can see the engine and int housing AND a 2-1/2" welded up "Y" pipe hanging where the outdrive should be. I had that piped right out the door of my shop. That was in the dead of this past winter. Then where you can see the outdrive down in a landscaper's bucket with a cover on it. I cut in an overflow and put the hose out the door. On top of that cover is an old oil burner that I converted into a blower. It is pulling the exhaust off the top of the water, and I had that ducted outside. I ran and ran and ran that engine for hours. Because of that set up, I was able to play with the outdrive as well. I ran it forward , reverse and nuetral. That was all this past winter.

One thing that I did with this boat that I was real proud of was what I did with the controls and the dual station. I put in a pair of Morse twin controls. The throttle above and below are connected and then runs back to carb. The shift above and below are connected, but then my "invention". I made a stainless steel treaded rod that drops down from the arm of the lower control into a empty "cabinet" space. I made (everything is stainless) bushings and a bracket that hold two very expensive (yes I borrowed them from work) Honeywell industrial rated, roller type, end switches. The rod passes right between them, and has an adjustable lever that engages the swithes. Each switch has a normally open and a normally closed circuit. I ran the nuetral safety through both switches normally closed circuit. I ran the forward through one normally open, and the reverse through the other normally open. If I am in nuetral, the engine can be started. If I am in eighther gear, it can't. Once running, if I put her in gear, the rod engages the corresponding end switch, and walah... I have a normal dual station, Morse twin throttle and shift, electric shift. My description can't do it any justice.

Anyway, the point of making the slide show, was just to say thank you to all the forum members that have helped me get so far with it.

Thanks Again.

I'd like to see some more pictures of the boat. I've always wanted a boat with dual stations.

Ditto rs2k. I'd love to see pics of the engine installed in the boat as well as your home-fabbed dual control setup. I've got a pretty good idea how it works from your description. Props to you for concieving of the idea and having the skills to actually build it. I'm pretty good at figuring out the 'what' of an idea, but usually get stuck on the 'how' to implement it. I do great as long as I have a plan/manual and a known standard to go by.

I forgot that you had the electric shift drive. Did that boat originally have a second helm? What kind of steering does that drive have? Tru course?

Re: 1976 OMC 235 HP Windows Media Video

I don't know if it originally had a dual station setup. But I know someone had been trying to set it up at least. There was absolutely no wiring left in the boat, when I got it. I had to hand lay everything. I set up a bank of terminal boards up under the bridge, a set down at second station, and a set on transom, near engine.

The only thing that I could find that would have been for shifting was a very strange, very large 3 position switch up on the bridge, none below. That switch was pretty neat. It seemed that if it were in the middle, that would be nuetral, and you could push it forward, or pull it back. If it was forward, you had to pull it once to get back to middle then pull it again to get it rear. Same the other way. It looked like original equipment as it "fit in" nice in the dash.

The steering had been upgraded to a dual station hydraulic system. It engages the drive with a transom mounted cylinder. I haven't done anything with that system yet.

There was no instrumentation below, but there was a wiper, go figure. I have since installed a tach, oil press and water temp guage below. I installed new ignition switches above and below. I installed a new hour meter below as well.

I had my hands full getting one stringer up and online, I couldn't imagine dealing with two. But wait, if one craps out, you're still moving, I like that idea.

I only have one picture of the engine done, and in the boat. I tried to attach it, just now, but it says the file is too large. I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

I have them both COMPLETELY torn apart right now for seal replacement and repainting. I had the gears strip out on one of them last week after it had sat in a slip for a week with bad seals. When the drive went out I was about 3 miles from the marina. It was nice to still be able to get home under my own power.

I have found that working on them is easier than working on my friends merc. Maintenance isn't too bad either. It only takes about 50% more time to do a job because of the second drive.

Just makes sure you keep water out of those drives and it'll last you a very long time. That boat you have looks good enough to warrant a brand new or rebuilt stringer if the need ever comes though.

How did you get two ignition switches to work or do you mean just kill switches? Most duel stations put all the primary stuff like hobbs meters and ignition switches below. Both stations should have tachs, fuel, temp, and oil gauges though.

I really need to put a kill switch on my boat. Those dang stringers make my cabin cruiser think it's a bass boat. It'll throw you overboard if you're not careful. The engines make it fast and the stringers make it maneuverable.

Re: 1976 OMC 235 HP Windows Media Video

I have two ignition switches. They are wired in parralel circuit. For start up I have to go up to bridge use key and energize tilt switch, drop outdrive. Then I can turn the blower on from the bridge and fire it up from bridge. Or, after dropping drive, turn ignition off, take key below, turn on blower, and fire up from second station.

I do not have the room to put in another engine and drive. When I get this all set and am COMFORTABLE with it, if and when I try to go sharkin' or for tuna, i will have an outboard and some oil on hand , just in case.

Re: 1976 OMC 235 HP Windows Media Video

SBCs and stringers are pretty reliable. I found the impeller in the port out board was pretty ripped upped. I always wondered why that engine ran about 5? hotter than the starboard engine, if it was a mercruiser I would have been wondering why the engine had cracked heads and seized pistons. ;)

It would be a very good idea to get a sea tow membership. I believe you can go up to 75 mile from show with one engine and still get towed in for free if needed. I think membership is only around $100 per year. I have two engine and I still intend to get it when I start venturing out into the gulfstream.

I decided to get a boat with a second engine in case of engine failure with bad weather coming in. Storms are extremely common in Florida. I don't think you have that same problem in New York, but I don't know.

If it's possible to accidentally leave one of the ignition switches to on, then you really should invest in a battery master switch. At least make sure you bring a spare battery with you.

Re: 1976 OMC 235 HP Windows Media Video

I have 2 key'd alike ignition switches. I have 1 key on a float hanging in the locked cabin. There are WAY better boats than mine to steal, so I don't over worry about that. Once I row out to mooring, I unlock the forward cabin space and retrieve the key. If I am cruising from the bridge, that is where the key is, and that ignition is on. If I need to cruise from the second station, the key has to go down below to run the boat.

There is only one key involved. (OK I'm not that daring, I do have one hidden in the very bottom of my toolbag for emergency use ;) ) and several spares at home. One ignition can't be accidentally left on.

Also, as I have been known to come home from work on friday , put out friday night for fishing, and not come in until saturday night or sunday during the day, I have 4 batteries ( 2 banks of 2 ) on that selector. And while I do most of the work on that boat , right on the mooring, I have a portable generator ( and batt charger) onboard. I know right now, its over kill, but I am gearing up to start building wooden gunnel sides aft, and in the second station area ( I guess it could be called the salon IDK) I am going to start building cabinets, seating, table , sink and cabinets etc. I have alot of woodwork ahead of me and will need the gen to run saws and what not.

On a side note, in my Swedish hertitage runs a long line of ships carpenters. I did inherit a ton of tools from yesteryear ( block planes with shaped blades, handsaws, tools for cutting dowels to use as nails or pegs, draw knives, even a block plane that is 2' long and about 4" wide, but I don't know how to use them. I am a welder, Dang It !!! Steel is my thing. I know I just PO'd alot of ancestors. But I will try to do the best I can.

I do have another complete engine/ int housing and drive ( for spares or replacement) that I would love to install , but just wouldn't have the room for two.

Re: 1976 OMC 235 HP Windows Media Video

LOL, my boat barely has room for two big V8s. I'll take a picture of the engine bay tomorrow to show you what I mean. The hull was originally intended for four engine packages.

Single OMC V8
Single Merc V8
Dual OMC I6
Dual Merc I6

Later on they added the Dual OMC V8 option.

It's kind of nice to have a boat with twice the power it was originally intended for. It jumps out of the hole faster than my 18' trihull. :D

Re: 1976 OMC 235 HP Windows Media Video

That is too cool.

I have been finding out that some folks that try to download and watch that WMV I made, are only getting so far into it and it ends. Others have gotten and viewed the whole thing.

I just tried to download it ( just using IE7, not my normal browser ) and watched it and it is all there.

I do not know if 4shared was having anykind of trouble or something, but it just worked for me. The end of it is a few shots of her on the mooring, then ( I know it's CORNY ) some shots of my kids showing off some fish that they caught. What stinks is for anyone that took the time to DL it and watch, the whole point of doing this boat, was for them and to take them fishing.

Re: 1976 OMC 235 HP Windows Media Video

I just heard from inlaws, that it cuts out at 6 mins and change. The whole thing is 9 mins 15 secs.

DAMN I HATE COMPUTERS!!! I will try to figure it out.

OK JUST FOUND OUT WHAT"S GOING ON:

WWW.4shared.com just gives 6:59 of "preview" time and no more. To see any file that is larger, which this is 9:15, you have to hit the blue download button. You have to download and then open it with Windows Media Player to view the whole thing.

I don't blame anyone for not wishing to download it, to view it, as I don't trust the internet either.
I am sorry for wasting everyone's time, I know there has to be a easier way to share it, I just don't know how , yet.

I'll try downloading it.

Here's the picture of my twin engine setup and the freshly painted intermediate housings.

That light you see in the first image is the boat basking in the glory of a twin V8 OMC stringer drive setup. :D:D:D
