Guys -

I'm cleaning up and painting my transom kinda in a hurry... I'm going to try to get some trim tabs installed for this weekend, and I didn't want to install them on top of old 5200, holes, and spot repairs.

So I got some fairing compound from West to go with my epoxy... ok stuff, looks just like chocolate frosting when it hardens. I fixed holes and smoothed the transom out ok, then applied some West Marine brand paint. I got lucky, and it just about perfectly matches my gelcoat. The boat's not very pretty regardless, but it's nice that the transom won't stick out a lot.

This morning I checked on the paint, and it's pretty and shiny, but still a bit soft. It was cooler here last night, down to maybe 65 or so, and I did the painting around 7, so that's maybe 12 hours to dry so far.

Anyone who has used this stuff know if it hardens more, or am I looking at scraping it off to buy something better? I realize I'm not being very patient, but at this point I'm going to end up driving four hours and installing my trim tabs at the lake in the driveway, so I'm wondering if my "schedule" is shot :)

So far it seems like ok stuff... about as good as the low end interlux "yacht paint".

By the way, anyone know if the "new" brightsides with teflon is worth using? I still have a can of the old stuff to finish off, but if it's more durable to use the new stuff it may be worth it...

Re: West marine paint

Most of the one part paints take weeks to get actually get very hard, so 12 hours isn't going to help much.

Oy, great.

Any problem using it in the water before it fully hardens? I'm gonna guess this will retard hardening, maybe stop it from fully happening?

I suppose this is what I get for not gelcoating or using a two part paint... but I just couldn't bring myself to pay $72 a quart for off white...

I understand that completely..But i can tell you perfection is as hard as nails, it is a long term investment . Where as BrightSides is a great paint it is not even in the same leauge when it comes to durability.

Yeah, I believe it.

Food for thought I guess.. I have a can of Brightsides I was going to paint my top cap with, but it's a year old.

I might have to consider Perfection, but then I'd feel obligated to make the top cap perfectly smooth... sand, sand sand sand..... gah.
