Well i stopped putting it off today and broke down and went to have my eyes checked. At 47 years old ive never had problems with my eyes till recently i notices its been getting harder to see the small print and to tie my fishing knots. Well the Dr. said i need glasses to correct my near sight and to help me focus at distances. He also told me i had to where them all the time. Well long story short i walked out with two pair of glasses one pair of sun glasses and one pair for inside. Then it hit me the price shock i just paid $730.oo for glasses. If this isn't high way robbery i don't know what is.

I realllly can't believe that I'm even suggesting this, but next time check out Wal-Mart. I'm not a big fan of Wal-mart, but I had to go to one of their optical shops on vacation once (Hint: take off your glasses when you're surf fishing) and was pleasantly surprised.

Re: Price shock

The nice thing about spending the cash on a good set of frames always pays for itself. I've had glasses for 20 years and 6 years ago I spent $800 on Oakley frames (regular glasses) and $750 on Killer Loop frames (sunglasses). I've only had to replace the lenses in the Oakley frames (3rd time coming up soon). Granted I did bust an arm on the Killer Loops, but some crazy glue and black electrical tape fixed that. My girlfriend has spent more on contacts in the last 6 years then I've paid in lenses and frames..

US Veterans, you can get glasses from VA. free, or small co pay. i got mine this past January, paid $55 extra for photo gray, auto change lenses. Frames had a very nice choice. hearing aids also, even though you don't want to admit you need them.

Re: Price shock

If you don't care too much about what they look like you can pick up a set of frames from most Army/Navy surplus stores or ebay for about 5 bucks. The lenses are around $75 or so.

These are by far the best glasses I have ever had, they are rough and tough, keep their shape for a long time, and they last forever. I've gone almost 6 yrs now on two pair, thats about $26 per year.

Yep, I had the Lasik about 12 years ago and I am very pleased with the results. One eye sees close, one far and the brain makes up the difference. I still see the eye MD yearly to check for glaucoma, cataracts, etc.

Re: Price shock

No matter how much you spend of glasses, the first time you drop them, they will absolutely, without fail, always get a single scratch right where your eye is and you'll be cursing that scratch until you replace them :). I swear, it never fails, it happens to every pair I buy, sunglasses or main glasses.

I had the LASIC done back in 1999 and my eyesight has reverted over the years, enough that I now need them for driving again. I still dont' regret having it done, though, as I used to have 20/400 vision and now have 20/80 (it was 20/30 right after the LASIC). A side effect was I lost a good amount of night vision, but it has slowly been coming back as the years tick by. For years, driving at night was a harrowing experience.

Get your prescription from your eye doctor and try the site TD posted or another like it. I have a pair on my face right now that are IDENTICAL to the $400 pair from the eye doctor for $49 from Zenni. I kid you not. I also ordered a pair of prescription sunglasses from 39dollarglasses.com for $80. Even if you buy the pair from the eye doctor....buy a spare set or two online and wear them on the boat, in the water, when using power tools etc. Can't recommend it enough.

Re: Price shock

I get the sunglasses and regular glasses and the worst ones are the sunglasses They cost me around $500, I called Costco to see if they will make lenses for one of my many different sunglasses I already have and they say sure come on down. I get there and they say they can not make them due to the curve in the lense, so I say ok and they show me a bunch of sunglass frames they can make them for and what do you know, the same pair as I brought in where there. I asked them why they couldn't make mine but could make them for their pair and they then told me I have to buy their pair for them to make any sunglass lenses. By then I was so frustrated because on the phone they told me to come down and it wouldn't be a problem and then tell me it was because of the curve so I just left and will not do business with them unless I have to in the future, and to top it all off this was all from the manager. I have since found out that most places will not make just the lenses with out buying new frames for the sunglasses.

Re: Price shock

Mrs Ken works for the top laser eye surgeon in this area. She had the early laser correction about 17 years ago. He gave her a slight monovision (1 eye for distance and 1 eye for reading) She has never had the need for glasses since and never needed a "touch up" on them. I have been wearing cheater reading glasses for the last 2 years and the eye doctor has told me that in another 12 to 18 months my eyes will be ready for laser surgery. Same as Mrs ken (monovision thing)
Looking forward to losing the reading glasses !!!!
The price is right as well. Free for employees and immediate family members.
