Hello all,

Let me start by saying I am not doing the over the top restoration like a lot of you on here. I have not found any structural issues to speak of, so the work I am doing will be mechanical and cosmetic. I will continue to update this page when progress is made. Keep in mind, I live about 45 minutes from the boat, and usually work 45-50 hours a week. I try to get there once during the week, and then at least one day a weekend. The progress and photos will most likely be weekly, or twice a week.

The boat: 1988 I.M.P. Liberty. 27' by 8.5' with twin 3.7LX Mercruisers and Alpha 1s. Previous owner siezed them up good. I snagged a Wellcraft with twin 470s, with the plan to swap the good manifolds, risers and heat exchangers from the 3.7s to the 470s. As it sits now, the running 2bbl 470s are in the shop, and the parts from the 3.7s are there as well. I need to clean and check/test them all, before bolting them on. Hopefully this weekend I can get dirty with the parts, and see if I will have any issues.

The remaining work is cosmetic. The cabin has been gutted with the idea to change the layout some, and update everything. From laminted cabinets with cheap brushed steal accents and a dated look, to hardwood throughout, and fresh upholstery and foam. There will be added function, sleeping and hopefully make it a place people want to spend a weekend. As it stands the cabin is gutted as far as I plan for it. Next up is to begin building cabinets, cushions and finding the appliances I want to use.

On to the photos: The first set are right after I purchased the boat.

So there it sits for now. I have the remaining cabin wood being refinished (well, when I get around to the last few coats of varnish), the foam and upholstery on order, and the wood is just sitting at the store waiting for me :D. Once again I will continue to update as progress is made!

Enjoy

Beautiful boat. Really has cleaned up nice. Don't know if you've ever had a cruiser before but if you haven't I'm sure it's a dream come true. Looks great!

Re: 27' I.M.P. Liberty "Restoration"

Thanks,

I personally have not owned any boat, but my family has since before I was around. Not a day in my life was spent without my parents owning a boat or three!

The three largest I dealt directly with were our 32' Luhrs, then a 24' Sea Ray, followed lastly by a 33' Chris Craft. This I.M.P. is my first personal boat. It is the exact style and type of boat I wanted. A mid sized, trailerable cruiser that would get up and go if I wanted it to.

It was fine when I first got, but it was extremely dated. I like putting the extra effort in to make things mine, and thats what the boat is getting. Should look 100% different when all is said and done.

Yup it's ripped down, hopefully with only one way to go, rebuilding!

Got the foam and fabric ordered and on the way for the cabin cushions.

Should get some done this weekend.

Thanks guys!

nice to see afew larger boats like ours, gives me ideas..., it doesnt look that bad cosmetically... take care of the swim grid, i would kill for an all teak grid like that, they are soo damn expensive..

Zach, no the one I was trying to off is long gone. I ended up not showing it to people unless they had a trailer, and got lucky that the first guy who came with one couldn't back down our driveway. We basically backed the trailer under the boat and it was his. He seemed happy with it though!

This is the boat I bought to keep.

lego, yeah I loved watching your build thread. I don't have the ambition that you guys do, but seeing you make progress motivates me. I love progress threads. I actually sold a mint teak platform for under $200 a while back. They are expensive, but look great hanging off the back of the boat.

Re: 27' I.M.P. Liberty "Restoration"

Not much got done this weekend. Wedding on Saturday, and hot and humid on Sunday, which killed me for getting a lot of work finished. I did get the foam and fabric in for the interior cushions. Got some more cockpit wood done, and tossed the carpet back there to get a feel for the look. Need to tidy up some wiring near the helm, and some more cleaning and staining and I should be done up there.

I'm hoping I don't go away this weekend, and can work on the motors!

Thanks for the offer Zach. Know anything about I/Os? LOL

Also I did the vasoline trick. I came the conclusion you need to really clean the hull with a cleaner first. A wash did alright, but there were some areas that came out spotty. Here is a in progress vasoline photos!

Take a look on the hull photo, there is a spot where I missed with vasoline, it gives an idea of the difference.

Re: 27' I.M.P. Liberty "Restoration"

Some more photos snagged today...

The foam is for the cabin cushions. The blue patterned fabric will cover the Vberth and the aft cabin, the tan vinyl will cover the setee. The wood wall is a panel that is going over the head wall. It will also have a map of the CT River that I will have the boat on, as sort of a mural. BTW the wall panel is not finished, just stained and one light coat of varnish in these pics. Enjoy

Wow, I love the layout and color scheme of your boat, what a fun looking boat for weekending at the lake, or a river trip. I love the doors leading into the cabin also, I'll be following your progress for sure.

Re: 27' I.M.P. Liberty "Restoration"

Thanks,

Yeah the boat fit what I was looking for perfectly. Its the size and style I want. I'm hoping with the cabin done it will be as roomy as I want also! Seems like it will work great.

Time to leanr how to sew some fabric over some foam. Yikes!
