Extra key on the boat?

It's about an hour and 15 min. drive to where I do most of my boating. Yesterday, we were in the lane getting ready when a sick feeling came over me...Did we remember the key? Normally we jokingly have this conversation at home before we leave.

Turns out we did have it but what if we'd forgotten. I decided then and there to get an extra key and hide it on the boat. Anyone else do this?

Boat ignition key cylinders are notoriously easy to pick, even for a novice. Or, anyone with some electrical/mechanical knowledge could get her fired up in no time at all. That said, if you can do neither, then having a spare key in the glove box of the truck can always be handy.

I also keep a full set of keys; boat, trailer lock, etc. in the glove compartment of my tow vehicle...

I trailer both of my boats. The keys are always in the ignitions. Why would you remove them unless the boat is slipped or docked?

Re: Extra key on the boat?

I just put a spare key on my boat. I always kept a set on my keychain but if we use my wifes keys for the truck and I forget my keys, we could be screwed if the key is out of the boat. I stood there trying to figure the best place for it. I hung it off of one of the cables under the dash. I actually never take my keys out of the boat ignition but if for some reason they are missing, we are set. I need to do the same thing with a spare plug since I don't have one.

I have two sets of keys for the boat and they both stay in the truck at all times. This way i never forget them.

Re: Extra key on the boat?

The best way I have found to keep an extra key is to use a small screw and screw it to the wood under the dash, then if you loose your keys several miles from the dock you will always have a spare. I did this after moving from one house to another and the boat keys got lost, that was three years ago and still haven't found them. In the glove box of my truck won't help me 40 miles from the dock. Floating key chains only let you watch your keys float down the river.;)

I keep a spare key in my tool box also, as well as a spare lanyard for the kill switch. Everything I need is in there. Even the tools to hot wire the boat if need be:D.

I keep a spare for the boat and truck in my wallet just in case, the regular key I usually keep in the ignition, I lost the keys to my truck one time and lets just say it was embarrasing, had to go to Chevy dealership and have one made and go back, glad it wasn't a Sun. ya I keep spares in my wallet now.

Yeah Man...

Spare on a float key chain, in the tool box. It is way to easy to steal a boat, to even worry about someone finding my key.

Spare key and a spare plug are in the glovebox. Mine is trailered so don't have to worry about leaving keys in it.

I take mine out to rule out the possibility of a kid or some other prankster from getting in my boat and firing it up and burning up my engine.

Keys in the ignition and the spare is in the cabin.

When slipped, both boat keys are in the cabin and there is a key to the cabin door on both sets of car keys.
