Battery isn't getting anything extra when running so I went to pull the rectifier.
It is on an 82 115hp inline 6. The rectifier has 3 wires coming off a solid state rectifier.
The middle wire (red) was very brittle in the middle and both the insulation and wire broke in my hand.
The wire is in good shape farther down. Any harm in soldering on a lead and trying it out back on the motor for trouble shooting. I will order a new one but am looking at a 4 business days.
Should I be looking for other problems that may have caused this? The other two wires are in good shape.
Other than being a cranky starter, the motor seems to run fine other wise.
