rectifier question

Battery isn't getting anything extra when running so I went to pull the rectifier.

It is on an 82 115hp inline 6. The rectifier has 3 wires coming off a solid state rectifier.

The middle wire (red) was very brittle in the middle and both the insulation and wire broke in my hand.

The wire is in good shape farther down. Any harm in soldering on a lead and trying it out back on the motor for trouble shooting. I will order a new one but am looking at a 4 business days.

Should I be looking for other problems that may have caused this? The other two wires are in good shape.

Other than being a cranky starter, the motor seems to run fine other wise.

Re: rectifier question

Re: rectifier question

One last thing, if my tach is working does that mean my rectifier is good?

Thank you so much for your help.

Re: rectifier question

No, that only means that side is not shorted, here's a test.

Theoretically no. Practically, probably.

If your battery voltage comes up as expected when the engine is running, don't worry about it. It'll be 12.4 or so before start, should come up to 14 fairly soon unless the battery is way down. Might go as high as 16 or so, indicating the battery is nearing end of service life or seriously needs maintenance.

hope it helps
John
