Hello, I may be picking up small project boat in a trade for and older SUV that I dont use anymore. The boat need some floor and seat work but other than that is in good shape from the pictures I saw. The motor on the boat is a Chrysler 90 HP. It says CHARGER on the eng cowl. I have not really had any dealing with chrysler outboards. I have been told by some people to stay away from them and from other that they are decent motors. I quess it is just a mater of opinion. The motor is in running condition from what I have been told. I will also be getting a parts motor in the deal. I am going to go look at the boat tomorrow. Can anyone give me some advise on these motors (good or bad). I have mostly owned Merc's in the past.

Curious if you can elaborate as to why.........The 90 charger is actually a 125. Same lower end, same block assembly. Just a different intake, reeds, and carbs to knock it down to 90 horses. And parts for it are still available from merc.

As long as a compression check shows no cylinder problems, it should make a very good motor.

Thanks for the info. I dont know much about these motors. You say parts are still available thru merc. Were these motors made by merc. I see this group list Force/chrysler, are they all made by merc?

Kinda, The SUV I am trading has been sitting for about a year and needs some work, same as the boat. The motor is supposed to be in good running condition and the boat only needs some floor work and some seats. I am just fixing it up to do a little fishing in the deeper part of the lake. I dont like getting in the 60 ft rought water in my jon boat. Its also not something that will be running up and down the lake or river for hours at a time.

early chrysler motors were actually pretty good motors with some solid engineering behind them. See if you can get Frank to tell you more about these motors. The chrysler brand was bought out by US MARINE in the early 80's, and then named them FORCE,bought out by brunswick inc. in mid 80's, which owns merc, merc phased them out in the early 2000's, but as mentioned parts are still available and are really good motors when proper service is done to them, just like any other motor. You always have some negative feedback on any thing, but in my opinion good, easy to fix motors when you have problems, and this site will help you through them. MOPARMAN

Moparman is very accurate. I'll just add that chrysler once had a full boating division that included sailboats and powerboats along with the outboards.

When they borrowed money from the government in the early 80's to retool the automotive division, the government made them sell assets, and U.S. Marine bought the outboard line.
