I have a 1984 15hp evinrude. It floods every time it is tillted up even momentarily, then needs much cranking to clear and restart. This happens even if I only tilt it to change angle pin then drop back in like less than 1 minute. Plugs get wet etc. What can I change or do. Not a mechanic just a bit of a handy man type. Thanks in advance for your posts. Bob :)

sounds like you may have a float/needle valve issue..that would be my first thing to check.

Flooding when tilted is a new one. If the carb is running gas through when tilted, it would drain out the front. Even with the carb cover in place it shouldn't puddle that much.

Thanks, can't find a sediment bowl so no float, after filter screen fuel line appears to go right to carb. I think I will buy a book so I know what parts I'm talking about. I'll be back. Bob :)

never heard of a carburetor without a float and needle valve...even my 5 hp lawn mower has one. But I do not know everything.
Good luck

The bowl is the bottom half of the carb casting...

Not logical!

Does the motor run properly in use? if so, the needle valve is working.
The float could be set to high causing fuel to spill when tilted. However the fuel would run out the front of the carb. this should not effect starting.

More likely, low fuel level. Tilting breaks flow, air entering fuel path. Low vacuum causes slow recovery and start.

Test this by - tilt motor - return to down position - PULL CHOKE - attempt start.

Check for loose carb or leaking carb to manifold gasket.
