I watched the Rangers beat the Yankees yesterday afternoon. Something that doesn't happen very often.

Late in the game Ian Kinsler, Rangers 2nd Baseman, smacked his second home run of the game into the left field stands. A NY fan caught it, but instead of following modern tradition and throwing it back onto the field he turned and handed it to one of the few Rangers fans wearing the Rangers T shirt who was there. That is real class.

Last night I watched a Little league World Series playoff game between A CA team and a GA team. A CA player hit the game winning home run, eliminating the GA team. As he rounded second base the GA baseman gave him a congratulatory salute.

There are real gentlemen playing baseball today, and at least one is 11 years old.

Good story and it appears you didn't have to make it up!

Re: Wonderful sportsmanship at the ball park.

JB, I saw highlights a few weeks ago of a kid with a glove at a game catch two foul balls in a very short period of time. I thought I saw him turn and hand the second to the person next to him. Am I remembering that correctly?

Great example here of a Yankees fan showing what class even they can have! :)

As far as great sportsmanship, just look at the billboards of Mallory Holtman and Liz Wallace carrying Sara Tucholsky around the bases. And watch the video sometime. That's total class and sportsmanship right there.

Yes the little leaguers show great sportsmanship. The home run shake was not the game winner. The game ended on a wild pitch or passed ball.My boys lost.

When did a smiley face emoticon give license to refer to forum members who may be fans of a certain team as primarily classless? My 13 yr old daughter is a Yankee fan and has the "class" not to paint an affiliation with such a negative wide brush.

I think it's always great to hear positive stories about sports nowadays, because we sure have our share of bad stories. Me being a Rays fan, the Yankees fans down here can be a little obnoxious, but nothing compared to those dang Red Stocking fans! I think it was earlier this year where some belligerent jerk (Red Sox fan) was cussing out the fans and players alike, and ended up getting tased and escorted out of the game. The fans all cheered when he got tased.

When did grown men from New York lose their sense of humors? Please guys, it was a joke. As the son of a mother who was born and raised on Long Island, I know better than anyone that the people of New York are indeed some of the nicest, most caring people in the world. They are also some of the most abrasive and thin skinned. Thanks for proving that. Geez, it was a joke, hence the smiley face.

As a Canadian baseball "follower"...since the Expos left, like many Canadians outside Toronto I don't think that Canada has a major league baseball team any more, and don't actually have any specific team loyalty. But I have been to two major league games, since wearing my Expos cap.

In Philadelphia, where I would have expected some problem, the folks around me got into a discussion with me about some of the great series we had, and we ended up buying rounds of beer and almost getting maudlin....that blew my stereotype of Philly fans.

At Yankee Stadium, there just for the baseball, and applauding as many good Yankee plays as Oriole's, two "fans" threw a few profanities "Expos suck!"...." Go back to Montreal".... and then a couple of beer...If I had had a stereotype of Yankee fans, that would have reinforced it!

If you are familiar with TW's posts he appears to be anything but biased; seriously taking his comment as anything but a tongue-in-cheek zinger (from probably a closet Cubs fan, since he is from IL) would definitely imply that there might be some validity to that old line about Yankee fans having the thickest skulls and thinnest skins in the majors". ...:)
But that is also a stereotype....

Not sure about the smiley face's meaning, but I know this one ---> indicates someone, perhaps even myself, thinks someone has a sandy crotch.
;) <----- this one means as a lifelong Oriole fan, I still would tow you in or give you some fuel, even though you might be a Yankee fan

I completely understand where you're coming from there TW! As a matter of fact, as the owner of dogs from a completely average midwest farm town, I know better than anyone that the environment yields some of the simplest, most obedient companions in the world. They also bark when it's inappropriate and defecate on their neighbors property. Thanks for proving that....:)

Ironically, I'm not a Yankee fan. Lifelong Met fan. Many family members (including my little girl) and friends are Yankee fans. Next time I tie up in the inner harbor, I'll flush the beach out of my skivvies first.

C'mon, guys. Celebrate the behavior of at least two great sportsmen and knock off the zingers.

Oh gosh no! I live in Illinois, I am not from Illinois. I am an Ohioan, born and raised. And almost as bad as a Cubs fan, I am a Pittsburgh Pirates fan!

Angus, really, lighten up. You are just proving a stereotype, in defense of what? A joke that was obvious to eveyone. Maybe you should watch that video I spoke of, about sportsmanship?

Wonder if that is what JB meant??...;)

Heh, and this, my friends, is why I think competition sports are stupid. I used to work at an 'institutional' sports company and to hear all the screaming matches over what other people did the night before or 15 minutes earlier, or anything.. made me wonder if these people had any concept of sanity. You are watching other people compete for absolutely no reason other than to brag. It's Bertha-better-than-you on an institutional level and the people who watch them compete somehow think they are better for drinking beer and watching it happen. Lunacy. I won't even add in the wrestling fans..

Why is it considered impressive when someone can witness a person do something impressive, or just well-timed, and not get hostile?

well, I don't care about baseball. I just want whirled peas. ;)

(The wink signifies that I made a really silly remark that some will have to think about for a second or two, before they get it.)
