Re: Wonderful sportsmanship at the ball park.

It's football season and you guys are wasting bandwidth on baseball?

Nah, not football season yet. I can't stand the preseason. Weren't they supposed to cut it to three preseason games and add an extra one to the regular season? That would be nice. I guess my baseball discussion is about over for the year anyways, the Rays don't look like they're making the playoffs.

This thread is not about baseball, or even football. It is about civilized human behavior toward one another. That behavior is in no way eligible for criticism.

Why all these complaints? Save your gripes for a gripe thread.

My question was, why is civilized human behavior toward one another eligible for praise? What do you consider normal if being civilized is special? I guess the follow up is.. If a sport normally brings out the more uncivilized treatment of others, why support it?

Saturday night I saw Orrin Hatch speaking at the memorial service of a political oponent. Although often on opposite sides of issues, his words were most warm and most gracious. Even though he doesn't espouse my political views, in my opinion there is another true gentleman.

Lowkee, that is a truly deep thought producing question! I will be thinking about that all day today. Gee thanks! ;)

Quit trolling, Lowkee.

There are degrees of quality in civilized behavior. Unusually high quality is worthy of praise. That in no way makes "normal" or "average" civilized behavior worthy only of disdain.

For example, why support and continue to participate in boating when there are so many brain dead jerks out there?? Does being out there make you a brain dead jerk?? Of course not.

I saw in one of those little league games that one of the pitchers nailed the batter with the ball. He ran to first base and shook his hand in apology. That's good sportsmanship too.

It always amazes me, how a select few that visit the DC forum always want to turn what ever the thread is about into something else. Usually turning it into something controversial, or turning the thread into a what they want to talk about instead of the original topic.
I personally find it disgusting and annoying.

Boating isn't a competition, though, so it isn't a fair comparison. It doesn't encourage you to to be a 'dead beat jerk'. The arguments in this thread happen in nearly all sports conversations.. I witnessed it nearly every day at work. Then I read it is 'normal' for a fan of an opposing team who catches a fly ball to throw it onto the field (presumably in a 'nobody gets it' act). Coming form an outsider, that seems a pretty crappy thing, as getting a fly ball is a big deal to plenty of fans.

As a non-sports fan, I don't see congratulating another baseball player for doing something well as above-and-beyond civilized behavior. Wouldn't it be 'normal' in any other circumstance? Which is exactly why I posed the question to begin with. Sorry to question what you posted. Maybe I should just call someone a name or get offended to fit in with the non-trolls.

I thought the purpose of interacting was to learn from one another, not get offended and name call anyone who questions your opinion. As Don mentioned DC ('dockside chat' to any casually strolling by) posts often change topics within a thread simply because most of them are people expressing an opinion. There is no question to be answered, and if there is, sometimes the question requires a different discussion to happen before it can be answered. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a sub-thread, so not every OP is neatly responded to in 3 words or less. Sometimes the premise of the post itself may be fundamentally flawed. What happens then? Everyone who brings it up is a 'disgusting and annoying' troll?

If everyone was so thin-skinned in the other sections:

"What color topside paint should I use on my moored cuddy?"

"Red"
"Blue"
"White"
"Topside paint shouldn't be used on a moored boat, as it will blister after a few days in the water"
"What a disgusting and annoying troll!"
"Yeah, That's offensive"

Sorry I even brought it up.

Go argue about something else.
