hard starting

i bought a 1979 evinrude 6 hsp motor, from a friend of mine, the motor looks clean on the inside almost new, brought it home added gas and after four or five pulls fired right up,went and shut motor down and tried restarting and pulled and pulled but wouldn't restart, after waiting a good 1/2 or so,i tried it again and after three or four pulls it fired up..i've rebuilt the carb ( which looked like it didn't need any cleaning, pull and re-installed the carb and started motor and found that the fuel pump was leaking and replaced that with a new one.i haven't changed the water pump because when this motor is running ,it runs fine and water rushes out the hole with a steady stream, now a friend of mine who knows a lot more about outboards than i do said that i should check the roll pin on top of the drive shaft...now, to do this do i have to drain the gear lube out ? (cause i just refilled that also ) also would it hurt if i use sea foam in this gas tank, after adding a stabiler to this gas ? do you actually think checking this roll pin will solve my problem ? i 'm under the understanding that this type of motor will never start on the first pull, and i really don't expect it to,but i would like to get it to start in two or three pulls, because i'm elderly and its still harder trying to start it in the boat than on land in a tank....thanks so much for reading and have a nice day

" i should check the roll pin on top of the drive shaft."

what does that have to do with ignition or fuel ?

For a hard start I would check compression, spark and fuel flow.
And I'd get an elec start instead.:)

Re: hard starting

Sound like it flooded, after waiting for few minutes and it started
Check the low speed pin see if it still good or broke off and stuck inside
I rebuilt it twice but did not notice the pin was broke and stucked inside until I pull it off and shine light inside and found brass pin inside

I have the same problem when the last owner tight the low speed pin too far in and broke off and stucked inside I have drill that out in order for it start
After that 2-4 pulls and it starts

Re: hard starting

i checked the low speed pin when rebuilding carb and its fine,my friend seems to think its the roll pin, said if roll pin came out the spring doesn't have enough pressure to seal,do you think this is possible solution? thanks

Re: hard starting

He means the pin through the top of the vertical drive shaft that supports the spring and components that make up the lower crank case seal.

Part #8 in THIS DIAGRAM

You would have to drop the gearcase off to get to it.
With the gearcase off you might like to replace the pump impeller anyway and also perhaps the drive shaft oil seal below the pump.

Your compression figures are about the lower limit of what is likely to be acceptable any way.

Maybe try a Seafoam decoke as described in one of the items in Tashasdaddy's Top Secret file at the top of the index.

Re: hard starting

You didn't say anything about checking spark. Should be bright blue and jump 7/16 inch. What do the plugs look like, are they the correct ones?

Re: hard starting

spark plugs are new and are L77j4 champions according to the tag on the spark plug wire getting a sharp blue spark also.....i just can't understand it starting on three or four pulls when 1st starting, and when restarting ,pulling and pulling and not starting and wait a half hour or so and three pulls and it starts up ? if this motor is flooding out when i shut it down, wouldn't it have gas coming out of the carb ?and, do you actually think checking this roll pin on the drive shaft is going to make a difference ? thanks for your time.....

Re: hard starting

Check the spark immediately when it won't restart. Could have a bad cd box, coil, etc. Sometimes they'll work until they heat up, then fail until cool. You can use a blow drier to heat it up too. Just don't drop it in the test tank!!

Re: hard starting

The low compression numbers don't make it any easier to start, they will run ok at higher rpm but the first thing that goes in a low compression situation is idle.

I would shoot some seafoam in the cylinders to decarb the rings and see if the numbers start to come up.
If compression doesn't improve after a 30 minute soak with seafoam I wouldn't do much more until thats fixed. Mine went from 60 to 83 psi after several seafoam soaks.

The head (or exh) gasket could have a minor leak, the engine heats up and compression goes down as the head warps slightly , engine cools down again and compression improves enough to start.

Re: hard starting

i finally decide to do a re-build on this motor , and tore it apart, and found out the one cylinder had a ring that was stuck and there was scoring marks on the piston...i'm going to order new rings, now, should i order new pistons or can i get away with using the old ones.? another question ---how hard is it to replace the pull cord assembly when i get to that point?----'cause when i pulled it out of its location the spring on the bottom of it bounced back.also the bearing for the connector rods, i guess that has a trick on putting them in place also ? thanks
