i bought a 1979 evinrude 6 hsp motor, from a friend of mine, the motor looks clean on the inside almost new, brought it home added gas and after four or five pulls fired right up,went and shut motor down and tried restarting and pulled and pulled but wouldn't restart, after waiting a good 1/2 or so,i tried it again and after three or four pulls it fired up..i've rebuilt the carb ( which looked like it didn't need any cleaning, pull and re-installed the carb and started motor and found that the fuel pump was leaking and replaced that with a new one.i haven't changed the water pump because when this motor is running ,it runs fine and water rushes out the hole with a steady stream, now a friend of mine who knows a lot more about outboards than i do said that i should check the roll pin on top of the drive shaft...now, to do this do i have to drain the gear lube out ? (cause i just refilled that also ) also would it hurt if i use sea foam in this gas tank, after adding a stabiler to this gas ? do you actually think checking this roll pin will solve my problem ? i 'm under the understanding that this type of motor will never start on the first pull, and i really don't expect it to,but i would like to get it to start in two or three pulls, because i'm elderly and its still harder trying to start it in the boat than on land in a tank....thanks so much for reading and have a nice day
