Piece the SX drive dipstick goes into is stripped - need P/N and assembly instruction

I am growing to hate the previous owner of my boat. The only issues I have had are leftover carelessness from him

The latest issue came up today when after i found a friend with low gear lube i decided to check mine. As soon as i removed the dipstick I could see that the housing it screws back into is nearly completely stripped from being cross threaded at some point.

The good news is that my gear lube is fine and water free looks brand new (Colorless nearly) but when i screwed it back in it is fairly stripped and i am not comfortable with it that way and want to replace this housing.

Is it as easyas it loos (I see the dipstick itself and two other bolts and how can I locate the P/N for this. It is a 1999 VP SX drive. I am sure it is fine as is and has been this way for a while but i don't care to risk water getting into the upper unit

Also the lube level is about 2/3 up the part of the dipstick that has the flat edge before it turns into just a circular stem. I am assuming this is just about right, is that correct??

Please advise and as always thanks a lot = hopefully i am almost done fixing his screw ups

Re: Piece the SX drive dipstick goes into is stripped - need P/N and assembly instruc

Thanks Don, I see I need part 19. I have a machinist that works for me in my plant and I am wondering if he can just repair this for me but my boat is stuck outside on my lift and I am afraid to leave exposed bearings out there all day

quick other question where screw 25 goes into part 24 i see there is in both of those screw holes a small opening almost like a tiny bit of the plastic is missing near the just past the perimenter of the bolts themselves. I don't know why both holes are the same but clearly it is not supposed to be like that but i assume the same genius that overtorqued the dipstick overtorqued these as well. Is that cover really protecting the unit from getting water in there or it is just for cosmetic / aero (or hydro in this case:) ) Do i need to replace this as well

I am hoping I don't have to buy both parts - it looks like this is a fairly common issue. Do i need to be concerned with part 24 based on the above??

Thanks Again - the parts schematic is great - the shared filed says the server cannot be found though

Ayuh,... Tarp up the drive if you're worried,+ have your Machinest Bud pop in a 3/8"x 16 heli-coil...

Do i need to worry about reshimming it etc or can i just pop it back on after he does his thing and expect everything to still be set up properly??

What about the other cover - issue or no?

Try it again, it does work, about 7,000 people have used it. There may have been a server glitch.

If your machinest does put in a helicoil, make sure it's in perfectly straight so the dipstick doesn't hit the inside of the shaft that it goes into.

It just worked - must have just been a short term issue - great download - thank you

Will i need to reshim - I am not experienced doing that and if so i will probably just take it to the marina and have them put a new cover on. If it is just remove helicoil and bolt back on i will do that as my machinist is a true perfectionist and i would trust his work probably better than a new part

What about the other cover - is that a concern or a non issue??

Re: Piece the SX drive dipstick goes into is stripped - need P/N and assembly instruc

One last question as i just ran down to the boat on the lift again.

It is screwdriver tight - looks like the issue with these (and i see other people have had this same issue is that they use a regular wrench and overtorque it. I just went to turn it with a screwdriver and it is as tight as it will go without me really having to force it. Is it safe to say that will do until i have it winterized in a 7 weeks when i can have them replace it at my dock?? I don't plan on opening it up again to check gear oil level as it is in good shape and at the same level it was the last time i saw it 40 engine hours ago??

Is screwdriver tight - tight enough?

I usually give them a bit more than screwdriver tight, no reason to get carried away though. I have watched owners trying to tighten them to about 500 ft lbs. before I stopped them with a "What the 'ell are you doing, trying to strip out the cap??????"

Even with a new cap, it wouldn't be that hard to reshim....... Read that manual you just downloaded. That's why I posted it.

Thanks Don - I have never used a feeler gauge before but i will look into it

I still am wondering about the other cover i referenced having the tiny perforations in it - do i need to replace that too or is it just there for cosmetics?? I am just worried that water is getting somewhere it should not. Please let me know

Thanks
Robert

IF you are talking about cover #24 in the parts diagram. It cosmetic only. Boat and drive will run the same with or without it.

Thanks i have a tiny perforation in mine, glad to know it is nothing to worry about. I am going to keep an eye on the bearing cover until winterization as it is on quite tight right now and then put a new one on when i have it winterized as i will have the lube changed in the drive at that time anyway

Thanks Again
