Ok here is the information;
90 mercruiser 5.7 with alpha one outdrive. 1990 bayliner 2755 sunbridge. This boat was in storage for 3 years. It was stored correctly and everything has come back on line flawlessy. What we discovered was the circulating water pump was shot.So we decided to change both the circulating pump and the lower unit water pump. What occured after the repairs was shifting was not interupted correctly by the interupt switch.

Ok her is the problem:
I replaced the water pump in the lower unit. I removed and reinstalled as per the manuals instructions. We acutually did the procedure 3 times to verify it was done correctly. Prior to this repairs the shift interuption worked corrrectly and since this repair it is not being mechanicaly activated. The switch does work and it is centered in the cam as it should be. My question is:
By doing this repair is it possible that I will have to readjust the shift and remote cables????

Are you actually having problems getting the unit out of gear while you are on the water? The switch is not supposed to activate when you have no load on the prop - like when running on muffs.

I was not aware that shift interupt did not work out of the water when the boat lacks a load on the prop. So then I would assume I should do the adjustment procedure as per the mercruiser manual and when I take the boat to the lake then the shift interupt should work correctly with the load on the prop???

You may not need to adjust anything. Nothing you did should have affected the shifting. If it doesn't work right at the lake, then you can start making adjustments. Good luck!

Re: Mercruiser water pump replaced now shift interuption does not work???

Just to clarify. Upon the first start up of this boat after 3 years storage the shift interupt mechanism would properly work on the muffs out of the water. After we dropped the lower unit to rebuild the water pump and reinstalled as per the manual (4 times) now the shift interupt does not mechanically work. If if pinch the shift cable ahead of the black plastic arm and cause resistance the shift interupt mechanism moves correctly. So would it be correct to say that if the cable was slightly sticky from sitting that it mimicked load on the prop. I have read the thread that was offered earlier and it explains alot. We are planning on launching the boat this weekend for the first time and I am just trying to make sure I am not missing anything. My plan is to go through the mercruiser factory cable adjustment procedure to make sure we did not move anything during our work. I was making minor adjustments but I recorded my start positions before I moved anything.

Ayuh,... As noted above,... That's Improperly... On the muffs, it shouldn't move at All....
If it Does,... You need a New lower shift cable....
