Looks good, although that's the exterior part of it.
Need to test it, as you will.

Sounds like you want it, so bring $3,000 for a down payment, and offer $6,000 total in cash,
if you got it.

I'd also ask first why they are selling out of such a nice boat.

Good luck!

I plan on takin all the cash with me since it's an hour away from me. I plan on testing it out and all that. They told me they are upgrading because they got a bigger boat.

I guess you mean a bank draft or cerified check for gosh sake, there are a whole bunch of people that would kill you for a 100 bucks. Don't know what or where our country is headed but I sure long for the days you could pretty well trust your neighbor.

Hope it's the perfect boat

Nope I mean cash money, hundred dollar bills. People these days don't like to take checks or money orders because of all the scams goin on. Im not worried about bein robbed. I got "backup" :)

Well went and looked at it and it is really clean and starts right up. No lake test but we hooked to a "fake lake" and ran it for a lil while. I gave him my offer and he refused, wouldnt even budge on the price. Said nothing below 6500 which I dont have so I left. I told him to save my number and email address and to get a hold of me if he changes his mind. Time to start lookin for other boats!

Sticking to your guns on price is a real hard thing to do. Good on ya. You will find something -- it's just a matter of time.

The boat is really really clean for how old it is. It's been well taken care of and if I had the 6500 on me when I was there I probably would have just bought it. I offered him 6100 and he wouldn't take it. I kinda just want to call him and tell him I'll give him what he wants since it's well taken care of lol. It's so frustrating when people won't budge a couple hundred bucks on a deal. I guess he could say the same thing about me huh? Haha

Im hoping that he calls me back and accepts the offer.

Just reading this, I was glad to see you didn't buy for the full 7k. I have seen a lot of these types of posts and for that age I'd hold out for something else...maybe with a v8 or dp. I know that is easier said than done when you are seriously in the market. I would love to be a buyer in this economy, this time of year if I needed a boat. Not sure how it works in CA but the boats on the market here in MN this late are dwindling quickly though. I have seen many late 2000's to nearly new Bayliners with the 4.3 in the 7k range this season. I would gladly take a nearly new, contemporary BL over a 13 yo Chap.

There's a 97 bayliner on my local craigslist with a v6 that the owners say has only seen the water 7 times. They just got it back from the marine center where the drive was pulled off and inspected/serviced. One owner, service records etc. Askin 7k right now.

What's the quality difference between the chap and the bayliner?

Have you ever looked at www.craigslist.com? That is where I bought my pontoon this year and the deckboat I used to have a couple of years ago. Here are a couple I found around here that are same type of boat and year.

http://tulsa.craigslist.org/boa/1394889563.html

http://tulsa.craigslist.org/boa/1393907487.html

http://springfield.craigslist.org/boa/1392610959.html

Finding what you want gets easier or harder if you have more to choose from. It's like my cousin says, make your offer - all they can do is say no.

Well, I actually have one of each and can generalize a little and will do it quickly. The Chap will have heavier construction, better quality components but could very likely have the exact same engine and outdrive. For instance my 18'3" Chap weighs more than a new 20+ foot Glastron. You can read up here why that is and whether heavier always means better. The Bayliner will have been made as a more affordable boat so may have a few less accomodations but will likely be faster due to its lighter weight but would take chop rougher. The thing about a boat that old is you could buy what once was a more expensive boat when new for nearly the same price as the formerly less expensive brand. Now fast forward to a three year old Chap and three year old Bayliner and you will see some very substantial quality differences and price differences. Back to that 97 Bayliner, since you didn't say which model it was or which engine, it is hard to comment but if it is say a 185 model with a 4.3liter you can actually get a literally nearly new two or 3 year old version for that much. I have on many occasions on a practical level thought why did I pay so much more for the same size boat (the Chap) and same engine as a newer Bayliner.

Not sure you said what you offered, but if your only $500 apart I'd scrape it up if you like the boat and feel it's as solid as he says. Everyone here will tell you tell you that it takes nothing to dump another $500 - $1000 into a used boat.

There are lots of boats out there, but sinlge owner, kept in doors, low hours, an impeccably maintained... :D not so many.

I've been thinking about it a lot today and I think Im gonna pay him what he wants. It's really clean and im sure it's hard to find a boat this clean for less. I think I'll call him tomorrow and make the deal just gotta talk to the wife and get the rest of the money. Funny how that works huh haha

Im still talking to her about it today. Just need to convince her that we probably wont find this clean of a boat of this age very often and if we do it wont be until the start of the season when the price will be higher. Ill keep this thread updated with the progress. haha

I like to say why I offer what I offer, e.g. the NADA values is such and such, there are N comparable boats I've looked at, one is going for XXXX dollars and has that and that. Being polite, patient and nice definitely helps. I'd also put a time limit on my offer and always state that the deal can be made immediately - contingent upon a successful lake test.

But: There is no point hassling with people who don't want to sell the boat to you for whatever reason. Move on quickly knowing that it is a buyers market. 6 grand will get you a nice starter boat.
