Hi, As some of you might know, I am a new boater whom recently purchase a boat. I am think about trying the boat this sunday and the weather is in the high 60(kansas). I wonder if this is a ok weather to go boating? I just want to put it in the water and test run it a little bit.

btw, have anyone ever been boating in even colder weather?

I have boated in the low 40's in Michigan.
It's all in what type of boating you want to do and how die hard a boater you are.
Take extra layers of clothing, it is better to remove layers than to not have enough on.
I have been on the water as early as March 15, and that is in Central Michigan with an I/O.
We did get a little anxious one year and got on a stand-up jet ski as soon as the ice was off.....mistake I won't make again.

Boating in the 60s sounds good to me right now:D

We may not see temps that high again until April:eek:

Won't stop me from using my boat though...I just got an outboard that needs to be run for a while and the fishing's been excellent.

When I'm out and it's in the 30s/40s I figure it helps keep the motor from overheating:)

Having once lived down south, I know how cold the upper 60's be feel when you are used to warm weather all the time. You'll be fine.

If the lake is large enough, it can act have an effect on the way the temperature feels. I'd guess your lake is pretty warm.

If we were to hit the upper 60's around here, everybody and their brother would be out on the water. We're dealing with the gales coming out of the west right now.

Come on Springtime!

60, cold???????

Man 20 is cold, 60 is a nice day, we were out for steel head last year, it was 28 when we left and 18 when we got back to the launch, I have a top and a heater but it was still pretty cold.

The only real threat to the boat is freezing and at 60 that isn't a problem.

as long as the lake is not frozen over you can boat. just drain the motor after use.

I'd go as far to say the colder it is, the better performance you will enjoy.

Also the colder it is the less boat traffic. Around here, after Labor Day, it's like a mental boating switch gets turned off, and the boats dissapear. Funny thing is that the ocean water temps are the warmest they will get now...

I usually winterize in mid to late November. I am looking forward to going to the lake tomorrow for the first time in about 6 weeks. It is supposed to be about 75 in Atlanta. I have been to the lake as late as early December and it was about 65. Just close the windshield and wear a windbreaker...

Kind of the same here on the Chesapeake. We went out the weekend after labor day, no jet skis, no one skiing or tubing, and way less traffic. I love it.
I wish I was going out tomorrow, should be in the mid 70's.

I'll try and get out 3-4 more weekends before I put her up for the winter.

C'mon, you own a boat. I think that is the definition of nuts.:D

I'm going to be out on the water tomorrow. Forecast is for partly cloudy and 53*. I plan on at least another 3 weeks and I'm 300 miles north of you.:p I don't winterize until I start seeing sub-freezing temps on the 10 day forecast. Fall boating is some of the best of the year.

My last trip last year was Vets day (Nov 11) in Buzzards Bay . Low 50's , sunny , and breezy . Keep the PDF on , sunscreen too , and I usualy take a thermos of hot OOlongo tea to warm up . I agree with Bekosh - the best part of boating is not worring of people thinking I'm a nut - I shake the tree so everyon can see the acorns fly !!! peter

Who cares anyway what someone else thinks. As long as you're enjoying yourself, that's all that matters!:D

And I'm farther north than bekosh. We already had a low of 24 the other nite. Don't plan on winterizing till the end of the month. Around here you need to take advantage of a very short summer compared to the rest of the country....;)

Re: is 60s a ok temperture to go boating?

I've had my boat in the water when ice was forming along the edge of the lake. Nigh time temps were dipping into the teens and warming up into the upper 20's during the day. I was bundled up like I was ice fishing but I wasn't the only one out there. There are 2 places around here that you can fish year round no matter the temperature and I've seen guys do it. The tail-race below the damn is ice free throughout the winter and you'll see guys out there fishing in January (our coldest month on average). As long as you can get your motor started, the cold weather won't affect anything.
