I am rebuilding a 1995 115 evinrude bored 40 over.I got some questions. My manual say you have to use a special rod cap alignment tool part number 396749.Where can i get this tool or is there way to align them without? My other question is about the needle bearings i kept the bearings with each rod and piston so they go back in same place on crank.I used a micrometer to check crank its in good shape but i dropped the bearings and now im wondering are they wore a certain way and have to go back exactly the way they were or does it matter?Should i get new bearing for the rods? What do i use to put case back to gether rtv or do they have a special sealent? Any one ever used vertec pistons they are made in italy.Im wondering if the ring end gap is the same as book? The directions that came with pistons are in italian. My machine shop said they new what to bore it to.i just want to make sure every things right dont want to grenade a new motor. Thanks WesTanner

Bearings should go back in the same locations they came from ands not be intermixed. The OEM shop manual cover this.

You can assemble rods and caps w/o a special tool, BUT make certain the rods/caps have not been mixed up from their mates. Assemble snug, but not tight/torqued, check alignment with a sharp pencil ... should go over the joint w/o a bump or feeling the break line, then torque carefully. Reuse bearings as long as they are not discolored, pitted, or otherwise damaged.

Again, the shop manual will detail the sealant to use for the case halves. DO NOT use any RTV here. I think it's Sealer 1000 or equal ... most good auto parts or motorcycle shops will have this sealant.

BTW, you need to determine the cause of failure (not the result of course), and correct, or it will certainly happen again.

You will use Gel Seal for the crank halves.
The bores should be bored to std size + the oversize. No need to custom bore unless you use Weiscos. Vertex are a cast piston and are supposed to match OEM. SO all the dimensions should be the same.
I prefer PERSAN/Sierra myself, but that is my personal preference, doesn't mean there is a problem with Vertex.
Just make sure you follow the service manual exactly, don't substitute materials unless they are identical. You should not use RTV anywhere on that engine.
Pay particular attention to torque and torque pattern.
Always use new rod bolts and do not, as posted, mix up the caps on the rods, they are a cracked cap and only go on one way, are specific to that rod. Also most engines should be orientated with the oil hole up.

The Vertec is a awsome piston and are what I use in my customers repairs and never had problems with them.

Thanks guys.I have the bearings and rods all together and not mixed up. I just noticed on the bearings they wll go in either way on rod and cap. When i took them out i just put them in a plastic bag with the rod and cap.I was just wondering do they have to go back exactly the way they come out? I dont know which one was in rod and which one was in cap.Does it matter should i get knew bearings? My crank is perfect. Thanks Wes

No, just put them together. As I posted I use NEW rod bolts and red loctite and torque to spec.
